Saline-coupled bipolar sealing has shown mixed results in primary arthroplasty. However, this technology has not been studied in infected revision total hip arthroplasty (THA), where morbidity is higher and conventional methods of blood management, such as cell salvage, often cannot be used. This case-matched study of 76 consecutive revision THA for infection included an experimental bipolar sealing group and a control group of conventional electrocautery. Groups were matched for gender, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists classification, and surgery type. Total blood loss, intraoperative blood loss, and perioperative hemoglobin drop were significantly less in the experimental group. In addition, operative time was significantly shorter in the experimental group, which translated into gross savings approximately equal to the cost of the device. The decreases in total blood loss and perioperative hemoglobin decline, along with financial savings, may support the use of bipolar sealing in infected revision THA.

Purpose: This study compared the performance of the new LigaSure™ XP Maryland Jaw Sealer/Divider (XP Maryland) to that of LigaSure Atlas™ (Atlas) and LigaSure™ Dolphin Tip (Dolphin Tip), two early LigaSure™ (LigaSure) devices characterized by consistent and reliable clinical performance.
Methods: Ex vivo bench testing on porcine renal arteries compared burst pressures, seal times, and rates of sticking, incomplete cuts, and charring between XP Maryland and Atlas and between XP Maryland and Dolphin Tip. In vivo acute testing on a porcine model compared thermal spread, seal times, and rates of hemostasis, sticking, and incomplete cuts between XP Maryland and the two early LigaSure devices.

Recently, laparoscopic nephrectomy has become more popular in veterinary medicine. In the majority of these procedures, vascular sealing devices (VSDs) are used. These allow for the closure of renal vessels with advanced bipolar coagulation.

Background: Hysterectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States and most are now being performed in a minimally invasive approach. Electrosurgery and vessel sealing devices are needed in order to provide hemostasis and vascular coaptation; however, there is no guiding evidence and limited recommendations for the use of the currently available devices for laparoscopic hysterectomy. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic review of electrosurgical devices used in benign hysterectomy and perform a meta-analysis to find the overall effect of various outcomes.

Background: Bipolar vessel-sealing devices (BVSD) have been used for muscle transection in canine limb amputations; however, a retrospective study of their use, and particularly the short-term complications, has not yet been reported.
Objectives: To describe the use of a BVSD as the main method for muscle transection in canine limb amputations and to report the incidence of short-term incisional complications following these surgeries.
Animals And Procedure: Medical records of dogs undergoing limb amputations using a BVSD from January 2017 to December 2018 were reviewed for demographics, preoperative findings, intraoperative complications, and short-term outcomes.

Objective Of Surgery: The aim of endothermal pupilloplasty (EP) is to optimize centering of the pupil, contour, or size.
Indications: The EP is performed in patients with congenital or acquired corectopia or an irregular pupil shape. In individual cases the technique has also been used to tighten the iris in floppy iris syndrome and to adapt iris tissue edges in patients with sectoral iris defects or iridodialysis.
