Altered neuroplasticity is increasingly invoked as a mechanism underpinning dysconnectivity in schizophrenia. We used Dynamic Causal Modelling to compare connectivity during the magnetic auditory Mismatch Negativity (MMN), an index of error prediction, between schizophrenia patients and controls. Patients showed reduced intrinsic connectivity within the primary auditory cortex suggestive of impaired local neuronal adaptation and disrupted forward and backward extrinsic connectivity throughout the MMN network indicative of reduced higher order input in disambiguating activity in lower network nodes. Our study provides the first empirical description of the dysplastic changes underpinning dysconnectivity between primary sensory and higher order cortical areas in schizophrenia.

Diffuse interstitial lung diseases (ILD) include conditions with identifiable causes such as chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP), sarcoidosis (SAR), chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (CHP), and connective tissue disease-associated interstitial pneumonia (CTD), as well as idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) of unknown origin. In non-IIP diffuse lung diseases, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid appearance is diagnostic. This study examines lymphocyte subsets in BAL fluid and peripheral blood of 56 patients with diffuse ILD, excluding idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), who underwent BAL for diagnostic purposes.

The correlational structure of brain activity dynamics in the absence of stimuli or behavior is often taken to reveal intrinsic properties of neural function. To test the limits of this assumption, we analyzed peripheral contributions to resting state activity measured by fMRI in unanesthetized, chemically immobilized male rats that emulate human neuroimaging conditions. We find that perturbation of somatosensory input channels modifies correlation strengths that relate somatosensory areas both to one another and to higher-order brain regions, despite the absence of ostensible stimuli or movements.
