  • - The text discusses the first reported case of Mycobacterium monacense isolated from the sputum of a patient in Iran.
  • - The identification of the bacteria was confirmed using both conventional and molecular techniques.
  • - It highlights that M. monacense infections can occur outside of developed countries, indicating a broader geographic distribution.

Article Abstract

We herein report a case in which the recently characterized species Mycobacterium monacense was isolated from the sputum of an Iranian patient. This case represents the first isolation of M. monacense from Iran. The isolate was identified by conventional and molecular techniques. Our findings show that M. monacense infection is not restricted to developed countries.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections from various extrapulmonary sites, focusing on identifying unknown species through modern sequencing techniques.
  • Analyzed 28 cultures from different patients, finding that 68% had mixed mycobacterial infections, with some samples also testing positive for the mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), despite prior negative results.
  • The research emphasizes the effectiveness of next-generation sequencing in detecting NTM co-infections and suggests its integration into mycobacterial testing to improve diagnosis and treatment strategies.

Differences in skin test reactions to official and defined antigens in guinea pigs exposed to non-tuberculous and tuberculous bacteria.

The single and comparative intradermal tuberculin tests (SITT and CITT) are official in vivo tests for bovine tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis using bovine and avian purified protein derivatives (PPD-B and PPD-A). Infection with bacteria other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) can result in nonspecific reactions to these tests. We evaluated the performance of the skin test with PPDs and new defined antigens in the guinea pig model.

Four bacterial strains (LJ126/S18 and Z-34/S20) recovered from faecal samples of Tibetan antelopes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China were analysed using a polyphasic approach. All four isolates were aerobic, short rod-shaped, non-motile, Gram-stain-positive, acid-fast and fast-growing. Phylogenetic analyses based upon 16S rRNA and whole-genome sequences showed that the two pair of strains formed two distinct branches within the evolutionary radiation of the genus .

is a yellow-pigmented, rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacterium (RGM). It is a rare pathogen in humans, and only a very few cases of skin and lung infection related to it have been reported. In this report, we present the case of a 70-year-old Hispanic male who was brought to the hospital with back pain for 11 months.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria are of public health significance, and zoonotic infection is attributed to the sociocultural practice of consumption of raw milk and the close human-livestock contact in pastoral communities. This study aimed at isolation, identification of mycobacteria from human sputum and camel milk and risk factors assessment in Samburu East, Kenya. Six hundred and twelve camels and 48 people presumed to have tuberculosis (TB) from 86 households in Wamba and Waso regions were screened.
