Analysis of exhaled trace gases is a novel methodology for gaining continuous and non-invasive information on the clinical state of an individual. This paper serves to explore some potential applications of breath gas analysis in anesthesia, describing a monitoring scheme for target site concentrations and cardiac output via physiological modeling and real-time breath profiles of the anesthetic agent. The rationale given here is mainly simulation-based, however, the underlying concepts are directly applicable to a routine clinical setting.

Despite the fact that the UN Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants specifically acknowledges that Arctic ecosystems and Indigenous communities are particularly at risk due to biomagnification of contaminants in traditional foods, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of substances in fish remains the preferred metric for identifying the biomagnification potential of organic substances. The BCF measures uptake of substances from water in water-breathing organisms, but not biomagnification of contaminants from food sources. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the biomagnification factor (BMF) can be used in bioaccumulation assessments.

Unlabelled: The intestinal diarrheal pathogen colonizes the host terminal ileum, a microaerophilic, glucose-poor, nitrate-rich environment. In this environment, respires nitrate and increases transport and utilization of alternative carbon sources via the cAMP receptor protein (CRP), a transcription factor that is active during glucose scarcity. Here we show that nitrate respiration in aerated cultures is under control of CRP and, therefore, glucose availability.

Background: Mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a rare and progressive mitochondrial disorder characterized by multi-systemic involvement. This disease manifests in various clinical manifestations, with heart and kidney disorders being among the most common. Accurate diagnosis of MELAS often necessitates a range of complex investigations.

Introduction: Pneumoconiosis represents the most prevalent occupational disease in China, with coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) showing the highest incidence. Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the exhaled breath of CWP patients may provide novel insights into its pathogenesis.

Methods: Study data were collected through questionnaires and medical examinations.

Exploring the Vibrational Coherences in the Ultrafast Electronic Relaxation of Pyrimidine Nucleobases and Nucleosides.

We studied the vibrational coherences during the ultrafast internal conversions (ICs) of pyrimidine nucleobases and -sides in aqueous solutions and the gas phase with an instrumental resolution of 14 fs. The coherence of the same ring-breathing vibrational mode with a frequency of 750 cm was observed. In the gas phase, the vibrational coherence was transferred during IC from the ππ* to the nπ* state, and it survived for approximately 1 ps.
