The clk-1 gene encodes demethoxyubiquinone mono-oxygenase that is necessary for the biosynthesis of coenzyme Q (CoQ), which is an electron transporter in the respiratory chain of mitochondria. Therefore, clk-1 mutant nematodes that have loss-of-function mutations in the clk-1 gene lack endogenous CoQ(9) and exhibit slowed behavioral rates and an extended lifespan compared with wild-type animals when they are fed standard bacteria containing endogenous CoQ(8). This finding suggests that clk-1 regulates behavioral rates and the lifespan through CoQ in nematodes; however, the effects of exogenous CoQ on the regulation of these biological processes have been incompletely evaluated. In this study, we found that adding 10 μM water-soluble CoQ(10) to the culture medium of clk-1 mutant nematodes that were fed a diet of standard bacteria restored the pharyngeal pumping, defecation and the lifespan to levels that were comparable to those of wild-type animals. The results indicate that both behavioral rates and lifespan are regulated by the clk-1 gene through the action of CoQ in nematodes.

Accumulating evidence is suggesting more frequent tropical-to-temperate transitions than previously thought. This raises the possibility that biome transitions could be facilitated by precursor traits. A wealth of ecological, genetic and physiological evidence suggests overlap between drought and frost stress responses, but the origin of this overlap, i.

Background: The Montreal classification has been widely used in Crohn's disease since 2005 to categorize patients by the age of onset (A), disease location (L), behavior (B), and upper gastrointestinal tract and perianal involvement. With evolving management paradigms in Crohn's disease, we aimed to assess the performance of gastroenterologists in applying the Montreal classification.

Methods: An online survey was conducted among participants at an international educational conference on inflammatory bowel diseases.

Background: Population-level mammography screening for early detection of breast cancer is a secondary prevention measure well-embedded in developed countries, and the implications for women's health are widely researched. From a public health perspective, efforts have focused on why mammography screening rates remain below the 70% screening rate required for effective population-level screening. From a sociological perspective, debates centre on whether 'informed choice' regarding screening exists for all women and the overemphasis on screening benefits, at the cost of not highlighting the potential harms.

Objectives: Chronic pain is a debilitating, multifactorial condition. The purpose of this study was to examine patient characteristics of those who did not show up for their scheduled first pain medicine appointment in order to identify factors that may improve access to care.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 810 patients from a single-center academic pain management clinic between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023.
