Published: December 2011

We report experiments and numerical simulations on supercontinuum generation with femtosecond Airy pulses in a highly nonlinear optical fiber. The ability of the Airy waveform to regenerate its dominant intensity peak results in the generation of distinct spectral features. Airy pulses and other self-healing temporal waveforms may be useful for the generation of spectra with desired properties.

Mapping nanoparticle formation and substrate heating effects: a fluence-resolved approach to pulsed laser-induced dewetting.

This study investigates the fluence-dependent evolution of gold nanoparticles formed through single nanosecond pulsed laser dewetting of a gold thin film on a fused silica substrate. By employing a well-defined Airy-like laser spatial profile and reconstructing scanning electron microscope images across the irradiation spot into a panoramic view, we achieve a detailed continuous analysis of the nanoparticle formation process. Our morphological analysis, combined with finite element thermal simulations directly correlated with the applied fluence, identifies two distinct thresholds.

Circular Airy pulsed beams are introduced to significantly optimize the acceleration of neutral Rydberg atoms. Compared with the conventional pulsed Gaussian beams used in the previous report, the circular Airy structure abruptly self-focuses and subsequently propagates with weak diffraction, resulting in a much higher accelerating efficiency for both radial and longitudinal velocities, as well as a longer accelerating range along the propagation axis. The parameter dependencies of the beams on the acceleration are also analyzed.

We have developed a confocal laser microscope operating in the mid-infrared range for the study of light-sensitive proteins, such as rhodopsins. The microscope features a co-aligned infrared and visible illumination path for the selective excitation and probing of proteins located in the IR focus only. An external-cavity tunable quantum cascade laser provides a wavelength tuning range (5.

Ultrasonic Imaging Based on Pulsed Airy Beams.

IEEE Trans Ultrason Ferroelectr Freq Control

September 2023

In ultrasonic imaging, high impedance obstacles in tissues may lead to artifacts behind them, making the examination of the target area difficult. Acoustical Airy beams possess the characteristics of self-bending and self-healing within a specific range. They are limited-diffracting when generated from finite aperture sources and are expected to have great potential in medical imaging and therapy.

Optical Binding-Driven Micropatterning and Photosculpting with Silver Nanorods.

Small Methods

September 2023

Nanoscopy-UGR Laboratory, Departamento de Fisicoquímica, University of Granada, Campus Cartuja, 18071, Granada, Spain.

Controlling the nano- and micropatterning of metal structures is an important requirement for various technological applications in photonics and biosensing. This work presents a method for controllably creating silver micropatterns by laser-induced photosculpting. Photosculpting is driven by plasmonic interactions between pulsed laser radiation and silver nanorods (AgNRs) in aqueous suspension; this process leads to optical binding forces transporting the AgNRs in the surroundings, while electronic thermalization results in photooxidation, melting, and ripening of the AgNRs into well-defined 3D structures.
