Published: January 2012

In recent years, case reports have suggested an association between long-term bisphosphonate treatment and spontaneous atypical femoral fractures. We present a case with a 67 year-old female who was treated with bisphosphonate for eight years and within one year sustained bilateral spontaneous atypical femoral fractures preceded by uncharacteristic hip/thigh pain. X-ray of proximal femur is indicated in patients with long-term bisphosphonate use and non-traumatic hip/thigh pain.

Background: Female recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are at high risk of developing human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated lesions and (pre)cancer. We describe the results of a cervical cancer screening program in these women.

Methods: From 2010 to 2022, 70 female recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in our institution entered a standardized protocol of gynecological evaluation.

A 50-year-old patient with a prior history of chronic smoking presented to the emergency department with diffuse abdominal pain, primarily localized to the right hypochondrium and epigastric region, along with nausea, but without fever, vomiting, or urinary symptoms. Laboratory tests were largely unremarkable except for isolated hematuria and a mildly elevated CRP. Given the atypical clinical presentation, a 3-phase abdominal CT scan (without contrast, portal, and delayed phases) was conducted, revealing a horseshoe kidney with an obstructing 4 mm stone at the right ureteral meatus.

Atypical mediastinal mass in the fetus: a review of the literature.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

January 2025

Department of Congenital Cardiac Surgery, IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, 20097, San Donato, Milan, Italy.

Objectives: Congenital thoracic masses (CTMs) are suspected in presence of solid or cystic thoracic lesions at ultrasound. The common typical fetal CTMs encompass: hyperechogenic lung lesions such as congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM), broncopulmonary sequestration (PS) and congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS); less common solid thoracic masses are mediastinal/pericardial tumors as rhabdomyoma and teratoma. The aim of our study is to gather the available evidence on cases of atypical CTMs of difficult classification, for which the diagnosis remains often uncertain.
