Department of Medicine, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Published: May 2012

Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) is a common disease estimated to affect 0.1% of the population and can be very difficult to treat. Many psychotropic medications have been reported to be successful in treating refractory CIU. The purpose of this article was to discuss the pathophysiology of chronic urticaria and provide practicing allergists and dermatologists alternative treatment options in the management of refractory CIU, especially in those who have concurrent psychiatric comorbidity. A review was performed of pertinent literature pertaining to the pathophysiology of CIU and the many psychotropic medications reportedly successful in disease management. Although more research is needed, this article serves to broaden the mind of the physician treating CIU.

Purpose: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive fibrotic lung disorder characterized by dry cough, fatigue, and exacerbated dyspnea. The prognosis of IPF is notably unfavorable, becoming extremely poor when the disease advances acutely. Effective therapeutic intervention is essential to mitigate disease progression; hence, early diagnosis and treatment are paramount.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a human pathogen from the Parvoviridae family that primarily targets and replicates in erythroid progenitor cells (EPCs). While its symptoms are typically self-limiting in healthy individuals, B19V can cause or exacerbate autoimmune diseases in vulnerable patients. This review integrates the involvement of B19V in the development and worsening of several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), hematological disorders (thalassemia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia), vasculitis, antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), dermatological disease (systemic sclerosis, psoriasis), autoimmune thyroid disease, myocarditis, and myasthenia gravis, and autoinflammatory disease of adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD).

Background: Posterior spinal fusion (PSF) surgery for correction of idiopathic scoliosis is associated with chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP). In this multicenter study, we describe perioperative multimodal analgesic (MMA) management and characterize postoperative pain, disability, and quality of life over 12 months after PSF in adolescents and young adults.

Methods: Subjects (8-25 years) undergoing PSF were recruited at 6 sites in the United States between 2016 and 2023.

Introduction: Diffuse pulmonary ossification (DPO) refers to the unusual formation of mature bone tissue within the lung parenchyma. It has been shown to be associated with a number of cardiac and chronic lung diseases. The relation between DPO and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has been shown in the literature.

Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), is a chronic lower urinary tract condition in cats analogous to PBS/IC in women, which presents significant treatment challenges due to its idiopathic nature. Recent advancements in regenerative medicine highlight the potential of Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs), particularly through their secretome, which includes mediators, bioactive molecules, and extracellular vesicles (EVs). Notably, exosomes, a subset of EVs, facilitate cell-to-cell communication and, when derived from ADSCs, exhibit anti-inflammatory properties and contribute to tissue regeneration.
