An explanation was sought for the high prevalence of paragonimiasis in children in Liberia by examining possible modes of human infection from freshwater crabs. The occurrence, frequency of infection, and distribution of metacercariae of Paragonimus uterobilateralis in the freshwater crab Liberonautes latidactylus were studied. The muscles of the cephalothorax and of the legs were found to be the most frequently and most heavily infected parts of the crab. A likely risk of infection of children was considered to be the habit of chewing on, or ingesting in a raw state, the walking legs of infected crabs. Possible contamination of the hands of cooks with metacercariae from the internal organs or haemolymph of infected crabs was thought to be a minor route of infection.

Paragonimiasis, caused by infection with lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus, remains a significant public health concern in Southeast Asia. In Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), information on the distribution and genetic diversity of Paragonimus species is limited. This study investigated Paragonimus metacercariae in freshwater (mountain) crabs and analyzed their genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships.

Adults of the genus , Dubois, 1936 are parasites of fish-eating birds, mainly of the family Ardeidae, and are globally distributed. The genus currently comprises 35 species, although recent molecular evidence has shown that the diversity of the genus is underestimated since several candidate species have been recognized. In the Neotropical region of Mexico, at least 6 lineages have been detected with metacercaria stages recovered from unrelated fish hosts.

This is the first report of trematodes parasitic in the estuarine isopod crustacean Cyathura muromiensis, and the fourth report from anthuroid isopods worldwide. From 52 of 54 host individuals collected qualitatively on the tidal flat of the Muromi River estuary, Fukuoka, Japan, 389 cysts of metacercariae were extracted (sample prevalence = 96.3 %).
