Background: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is a potential molecular prognostic factor for breast cancer, and calcitriol [1,25(OH)(2)D(3)], the biologically active form of vitamin D, is a promising target in breast cancer therapy.
Materials And Methods: The influence of calcitriol on the proliferation and the effects of calcitriol on the expression of prostaglandin- and vitamin D-metabolising enzymes were examined in benign and malignant breast cells.
Results: Calcitriol inhibited the proliferation of MCF-10F and MCF-7 cells but not of invasive MDA-MB-231 cells and reduced the expression of COX-2 and 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) in the benign breast cell line MCF-10F. Furthermore, dysregulation in vitamin D-metabolising proteins was detected, especially in MDA-MB-231 cells.
Conclusion: These results suggest dysregulation of vitamin D metabolism and a lack of a possible influence of calcitriol on the metabolism of prostaglandins in the malignant breast cell lines.

The pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is among the deadliest tumor diseases worldwide. While treatment options have generally become more diverse, little progress has been made in the treatment of PDAC and the median survival time for patients with locally advanced PDAC is between 8.7 and 13.

Background: The vitamin D pathway contributes to the microbicidal activity of macrophages against infection. In addition to induction of this pathway, interferon-gamma (IFNγ), interleukin (IL)-15, and IL32γ are part of a network of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The aim of this study was to evaluate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the components of the vitamin D pathway and associated cytokine genes that could be related to resistance or susceptibility to American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL).

Background And Aim: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily involves synovial joints. During the past decade, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and biologic agents have been introduced for the treatment of RA. However, they have limitations, including incomplete treatment response, adverse effects requiring drug withdrawal, fall off in efficacy over time, high cost of biologic agents, and refractory cases.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among healthy young medical and dental students at Kuwait University.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included a total of 201 medical and dental students (male = 99; female = 102) at Kuwait University. Blood samples were collected to assess 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) by electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay, and a questionnaire was distributed to address related qualitative data.

Background: Aerobic vaginitis (AV) is a state of abnormal vaginal microbiota, which is associated with increased numbers of aerobic, enteric bacteria and inflammation of the vaginal epithelium. Anti-microbial treatment combined with anti-inflammatory therapy could be useful in the treatment of this condition. It is known that calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, plays an important role in modulating the immune response in several inflammatory diseases.
