Background: Historic carbon emissions are an important foundation for proposed efforts to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation and enhance forest carbon stocks through conservation and sustainable forest management (REDD+). The level of uncertainty in historic carbon emissions estimates is also critical for REDD+, since high uncertainties could limit climate benefits from credited mitigation actions. Here, we analyzed source data uncertainties based on the range of available deforestation, forest degradation, and forest carbon stock estimates for the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso during 1990-2008.
Results: Deforestation estimates showed good agreement for multi-year periods of increasing and decreasing deforestation during the study period. However, annual deforestation rates differed by > 20% in more than half of the years between 1997-2008, even for products based on similar input data. Tier 2 estimates of average forest carbon stocks varied between 99-192 Mg C ha-1, with greatest differences in northwest Mato Grosso. Carbon stocks in deforested areas increased over the study period, yet this increasing trend in deforested biomass was smaller than the difference among carbon stock datasets for these areas.
Conclusions: Estimates of source data uncertainties are essential for REDD+. Patterns of spatial and temporal disagreement among available data products provide a roadmap for future efforts to reduce source data uncertainties for estimates of historic forest carbon emissions. Specifically, regions with large discrepancies in available estimates of both deforestation and forest carbon stocks are priority areas for evaluating and improving existing estimates. Full carbon accounting for REDD+ will also require filling data gaps, including forest degradation and secondary forest, with annual data on all forest transitions.

Estimation of forest biomass at regional scale based on GEDI spaceborne LiDAR data is of great significance for forest quality assessment and carbon cycle. To solve the problem of discontinuous data of GEDI footprints, this study mapped different echo indexes in the footprints to the surface by inverse distance weighted interpolation method, and verified the influence of different number of footprints on the interpolation results. Random forest algorithm was chosen to estimate the spruce-fir biomass combined with the parameters provided by GEDI and 138 spruce-fir sample plots in Shangri-La.

Coarse roots represent a globally important belowground carbon pool, but the factors controlling coarse root decomposition rates remain poorly understood relative to other plant biomass components. We compiled the most comprehensive dataset of coarse root decomposition data including 148 observations from 60 woody species, and linked coarse root decomposition rates to plant traits, phylogeny and climate to address questions of the dominant controls on coarse root decomposition. We found that decomposition rates increased with mean annual temperature, root nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

Deadwood represents globally important carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) pools. Current wood nutrient dynamics models are extensions of those developed for leaf litter decomposition. However, tissue structure and dominant decomposers differ between leaf and woody litter, and recent evidence suggests that decomposer stoichiometry, in combination with litter quality, may affect nutrient release.

In this investigation, the influence of organic amendment on the structural and functional dynamics of soil microbial communities and its effect on rice productivity were examined. Five fertilization treatments from a 40-year field experiment were selected: no fertilizer (CK), inorganic NPK fertilizer (NPK), inorganic NPK combined with green manure (NG), inorganic NPK combined with green manure and pig manure (NGM), and inorganic NPK combined with green manure and rice straw (NGS). The findings revealed that the organic amendment enhanced the soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) levels, alongside an increase in rice yield; notably, the most significant improvements were observed with the NGM treatment.
