This study aimed at examining sensitivity to lateral linguistic and nonlinguistic information in third and fifth grade readers. A word identification task with a threshold was used, and targets were displayed foveally with or without distractors. Sensitivity to lateral information was inferred from the deterioration of the rate of correct word identification when displayed with distractors. Results show that the two reader groups were sensitive to both right and left lateral information. The area of sensitivity to this information was more extended for the identification of easy words than difficult words. Examination of the detrimental effect of distractors suggests that in both third and fifth graders, the impact of lateral information on foveal processing is the result of a general distraction effect, but also of linguistic processing whose nature remains to be clarified.

Background: Distal tibial deformities are not assessed using the proximal anatomical axis (PAA) to determine the posterior tibial slope (PTS). Therefore, it seems advantageous to measure PTS on full-length lateral tibial radiographs using the mechanical axis (MA).
Purposes: To (1) compare the PTS measurements using the MA and the PAA and (2) determine whether using the PAA fails to detect a certain number of significantly elevated PTS values compared with using the MA.

Musculoskeletal modeling based on inverse dynamics provides a cost-effective non-invasive means for calculating intersegmental joint reaction forces and moments, solely relying on kinematic data, easily obtained from smart wearables. On the other hand, the accuracy and precision of such models strongly hinge upon the selected scaling methodology tailored to subject-specific data. This study investigates the impact of upper body mass distribution on internal and external kinetics computed using a comprehensive musculoskeletal model during level walking in both normal weight and obese individuals.

Thermal and stretching characteristics are crucial variables in healthcare, robotics, and human-machine interaction applications. Here, we present a single-mode fiber-based, balloon-shaped, single- and dual polymer-layered optical wearable (PLOW) system that can sense both temperature and stretching. These two types of PLOWs are compared in terms of their detection performance across all criteria.

Influenza A virus (IAV) and influenza B virus (IBV) with similar symptoms of infection caused a serious disease burden and economic losses in annual epidemic season, so it is important to quickly and accurately detect and distinguish between IAV and IBV during influenza season. Herein, the quantum dot microspheres (QDMS) were synthesized and applied to lateral flow immunoassays (LFIA), and a point-of-care (POC) biosensor that can discriminately and simultaneously diagnose IAV and IBV within 10 min was established. A double-sandwich QDMS nanotags was synthesized by immobilizing hydrophobic quantum dots (QDs) with chemical bonding method on a silica sphere template with an outer silica shell protection showed excellent stability and high fluorescence.

Unlabelled: Bovine herpesvirus (BoHV) infection poses a significant threat to the healthy development of the cattle industry. BoHV-1 primarily causes infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, while BoHV-5 is associated with bovine necrotic meningoencephalitis. These two pathogens not only exhibit a high correlation in antigenicity and genetic background but, more importantly, can establish latent infections within the bovine ganglion.
