Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) are essential for the cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. We investigated differences in serum levels of these markers between patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and sinus rhythm (SR).

Methods: Serum levels of MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were measured in 86 patients: 27 on SR without any AF history, 33 with paroxysmal and 26 with permanent AF. All subjects had essential hypertension, normal systolic function and no coronary artery disease.

Results: Patients with AF had higher MMP-2, MMP-3 and MMP-9 and lower TIMP-1 compared to SR subjects (all p < 0.001). Paroxysmal AF was associated with higher MMP-2 levels compared to permanent AF (p < 0.001). Matrix metalloproteinase-9 but not MMP-3 was higher in permanent compared to paroxysmal AF group (p < 0.001). Patients with AF had lower levels of TIMP-1 compared to those with SR while permanent AF subjects had lower TIMP-1 levels than those with paroxysmal AF (p < 0.001 for both comparisons). Lower TIMP-1 was the only independent factor associated with AF (OR: 0.259, 95%CI: 0.104-0.645, p = 0.004).

Conclusions: In hypertensives, paroxysmal AF and permanent AF differ with respect to serum MMPs. Increased MMP-2 is associated with paroxysmal, whereas increased MMP-9 with permanent AF. Additionally, lower levels of TIMP-1 had a strong association with AF incidence.

This study evaluated the effect of ulinastatin on blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction in rats with postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) following general anaesthesia with isoflurane. Specifically, we examined BBB permeability and the expression of tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1). Rats in the ulinastatin group received the drug intraperitoneally (50,000 U/mL), while controls received normal saline (1 mL) administered before general anaesthesia.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to examine the impact of a low iron diet on arthritis progression in a mouse model, focusing on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA).
  • Male DBA/1 mice were divided into two groups: one fed a normal iron diet and the other a low iron diet, with arthritis monitored over 34 days after immunization.
  • Results showed mice on a low iron diet had less severe arthritis, lower serum levels of a key inflammatory regulator, and decreased red blood cell indices, indicating less iron absorption.

Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery, Shanxi Bethune Hospital, Shanxi Academy of Medical Science, Tongji Shanxi Hospital, Third Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, Taiyuan, Shanxi, 030032, People's Republic of China.

Objective: To unravel the effects of different laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs (IHRs) on inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and postoperative recovery of inguinal hernia (IH) patients.

Methods: A total of 88 patients for laparoscopic treatment of IH were studied in a retrospective cohort, and were randomized into the transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair group (n = 44) and the total extraperitoneal (TEP) repair group (n = 44) according to the method of treatment. Patients in the TAPP group underwent laparoscopic TAPP IHR, while patients in the TEP group underwent laparoscopic TEP IHR.

Background/aim: In gastric cancer (GCa) tissues, the mRNA and protein levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) are significantly elevated compared to adjacent non-cancerous tissues. Moreover, the abnormal up-regulation of TIMP-1 has been associated with a poor prognosis. However, the role of TIMP-1 genotypes in susceptibility to GCa has seldom been investigated.

The elderly population wants to improve skin function and maintain a youthful appearance without wrinkles. Laser is one of the highly developed and widely used therapeutic modalities of skin aging by stimulating dermal collagen formation. Picosecond laser therapy is performed on skin with wrinkles to determine the mechanism of wrinkle improvement with a picosecond laser through an increasing in tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1), and a decrease in matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), which was confirmed by collagen density.
