Leukocyte telomere length decreased the risk of mortality in patients with alcohol-associated liver disease.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

December 2024

Department of VIP Region, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, China.

Background: It is necessary to find latent indicators to predict the survival of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) patients. Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) was regarded as an indicator of prognosis in several diseases. However, the relationships between LTL and survival as well as cause-specific mortality in ALD patients were still unknown.

Liuweizhiji Gegen-Sangshen beverage protects against alcoholic liver disease in mice through the gut microbiota mediated SCFAs/GPR43/GLP-1 pathway.

Front Nutr

December 2024

Department of Spleen and Stomach Diseases, The Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Southwest Medical University, Luzhou, Sichuan, China.

Introduction: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a pathological state of the liver caused by longterm alcohol consumption. Recent studies have shown that the modulation of the gut microbiota and its metabolic products, specifically the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), exert a critical role in the evolution and progression of ALD. The Liuweizhiji Gegen-Sangshen beverage (LGS), as a functional beverage in China, is derived from a traditional Chinese herbal formula and has been clinically applied for ALD treatment, demonstrating significant efficacy.

LGBTQ+ youth policy and mental health: Indirect effects through school experiences.

J Res Adolesc

March 2025

Department of Family Science, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA.

The link between state policies and LGBTQ+ youth mental health is well-established, yet less well-understood are the mechanisms that drive these associations. We used a sample from the LGBTQ+ National Teen Survey (n = 8368) collected in 2022 to examine whether and to what degree LGBTQ+ inclusive school strategies, student perceptions of school safety, and experiences with bias-based bullying and peer victimization explain the association between state LGBTQ+ youth-focused policies and LGBTQ+ youth mental health symptomology. We observed significant indirect effects between policy and LGBTQ+ youth mental health through all four constructs, suggesting that each of these more proximal school experiences was independently implicated in this association.

Cannabis use disorder affects up to 42% of individuals with schizophrenia, correlating with earlier onset, increased positive symptoms, and more frequent hospitalizations. This study employed an untargeted lipidomics approach to identify biomarkers in plasma samples from subjects with schizophrenia, cannabis use disorder, or both (dual diagnosis), aiming to elucidate the metabolic underpinnings of cannabis abuse and schizophrenia development. The use of liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry enabled the annotation of 119 metabolites, with the highest identification confidence level achieved for 16 compounds.
