In liver transplantation, donor livers are typically stored in a preservation solution at 4°C for up to 12 hours. However, this short preservation duration can lead to various issues, such as suboptimal donor-recipient matching and limited opportunities for organ sharing. Previous studies have developed a long-term preservation method called supercooling liver preservation (SLP) to address these issues.

Article Synopsis
  • - Paederus contact dermatitis is a skin condition caused by beetles from the Paederus genus, which release a harmful toxin called paederin, commonly found in hot climates and during rainy seasons.
  • - Symptoms include red patches with blisters on the skin, often accompanied by burning and itching, as demonstrated by a case of a 28-year-old male who developed lesions after vacationing in Ecuador.
  • - Treatment involves washing the affected area, using topical steroids, and antihistamines; in the reported case, the patient improved significantly after 8 days, although some dark spots remained after the lesions healed.

Mammalian hibernators survive prolonged periods of cold and resource scarcity by temporarily modulating normal physiological functions, but the mechanisms underlying these adaptations are poorly understood. The hibernation cycle of thirteen-lined ground squirrels lasts for 5-7 months and comprises weeks of hypometabolic, hypothermic torpor interspersed with 24-48-hour periods of an active-like interbout arousal (IBA) state. We show that ground squirrels, who endure the entire hibernation season without food, have negligible hunger during IBAs.

Prolonged cold-preservation of domestic cat ovarian tissue is improved by extracellular solution but impaired by the fragmentation of ovary.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of different storage solutions on the preservation of domestic cat ovaries during cold-storage.
  • Findings indicate that storing whole ovaries in SP+ solution for 48 hours maintains better follicular morphology compared to DPBS, while UW solution is preferable for ovarian tissue fragments.
  • It is recommended that ovarian fragmentation be avoided prior to cold-storage, as it negatively impacts follicular structure preservation.
