Ion pair receptor 3 bearing an anion binding site and multiple cation binding sites has been synthesized and shown to function in a novel binding-release cycle that does not necessarily require displacement to effect release. The receptor forms stable complexes with the test cesium salts, CsCl and CsNO(3), in solution (10% methanol-d(4) in chloroform-d) as inferred from (1)H NMR spectroscopic analyses. The addition of KClO(4) to these cesium salt complexes leads to a novel type of cation metathesis in which the "exchanged" cations occupy different binding sites. Specifically, K(+) becomes bound at the expense of the Cs(+) cation initially present in the complex. Under liquid-liquid conditions, receptor 3 is able to extract CsNO(3) and CsCl from an aqueous D(2)O layer into nitrobenzene-d(5) as inferred from (1)H NMR spectroscopic analyses and radiotracer measurements. The Cs(+) cation of the CsNO(3) extracted into the nitrobenzene phase by receptor 3 may be released into the aqueous phase by contacting the loaded nitrobenzene phase with an aqueous KClO(4) solution. Additional exposure of the nitrobenzene layer to chloroform and water gives 3 in its uncomplexed, ion-free form. This allows receptor 3 to be recovered for subsequent use. Support for the underlying complexation chemistry came from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and gas-phase energy-minimization studies.

High ionic conductivity poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are of growing interest for their thermal and electrochemical stability, processability, and potential in safe, flexible all-solid-state electrochemical devices. While various approaches to enhance the ionic conductivity are reported, the influence of cation substituents is rarely addressed. Moreover, some of the asymmetric anions recently developed for high-conductivity ionic liquids were never tested in PILs.

Porphyrinoids in the 20π-electron state have been extensively studied from the fundamental viewpoint of investigating their structure-antiaromaticity relationships. However, most of the 20π porphyrinoids are highly distorted and unstable in air, which hinder the comprehensive analysis of paratropic ring-current effects derived from planar π-electron systems. Herein, we present the first examples of antiaromatic Sn(IV) complexes of 5,10,15,20-tetraaryl-5,15-diazaporphyrinoids (SnXTADAPs), prepared by the complexation of the corresponding freebases with Sn(II) chloride under aerobic conditions and subsequent metathesis of the axial ligands, that show paratropic ring-current effects.

Spectroscopic Insight on Neodymium Solvation in Lithium Borohydride-Supported Electrolyte.

J Phys Chem B

December 2024

Radiochemistry and Nuclear Measurements, Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83415, United States.

Borohydride-based electrolytes have recently emerged as promising media for the electrodeposition of electropositive metals, including rare earth (RE) elements. While the presence of supporting alkali metal cations and RE counteranions provides essential electrochemical conductivity for achieving fast metal electrodeposition, interactions between the host ligand and solvated neodymium (Nd) complexes remain unclear. This study provides insights into the coordination structure of a concentrated and directly solvated Nd salt in a lithium borohydride-supported electrolyte.

The 5,6-Bis(diisopropylphosphino)acenaphthene -stabilized Sb(I) cationic compound [LSb][OTf] (OTf = CFSO) possessing two lone pairs of electrons on the Sb(I) center showed nucleophilic behavior toward methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate forming the oxidized product [LSbMe][OTf] (OTf = CFSO). Reaction of compound with Lewis acids such as GaCl and AlBr led to changes in the counteranions only giving products [LSb][GaCl] and [LSb][SbBr] , respectively. A metathesis reaction was observed when compound was reacted with PI.

Sb-to-P Metathesis: A Direct Route to Structurally Constrained, Cationic P Compound.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Structurally constrained, cationic P compound [LP][SbCl] with an OCO pincer-type ligand (L) having a central carbene donor was directly synthesized via an Sb-to-P metathesis reaction between PCl and LSb-Cl. [LP][SbCl] was isolated and its reactivity with small molecules (ROH and RNH) was studied, showing that [SbCl] is not an innocent counter anion, but an active participant in these reactions. When the [SbCl] was replaced with the [CBH] ([Cb]) anion, the reactions were redirected to [LP] cation only.
