Published: October 2012

This article presents the basic principles of the superstimulated echo mechanism and shows preliminary results of its application to T1-weighted imaging with positive T1-contrast. A superstimulated echo scheme uses a preparation of square-wave modulated, periodically inverted z-magnetization, which after signal evolution during the mixing time TM is fully converted into transverse magnetization. This avoids the 50% signal loss of a conventional stimulated echo. Furthermore, its implementation as a preparation module for standard turbo spin echo (TSE) imaging allows producing images with positive T1-contrast.

Protease-Mediated Contrast Enhancement of Multilayered Magneto-Gadolinium Nanostructures for Imaging and Magnetic Hyperthermia.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, 16163 Genova, Italy.

In this work, we constructed a multifunctional composite nanostructure for combined magnetic hyperthermia therapy and magnetic resonance imaging based on and signals. First, iron oxide nanocubes with a benchmark heating efficiency for magnetic hyperthermia were assembled within an amphiphilic polymer to form magnetic nanobeads. Next, poly(acrylic acid)-coated inorganic sodium gadolinium fluoride nanoparticles were electrostatically loaded onto the magnetic nanobead surface via a layer-by-layer approach by employing a positively charged enzymatic-cleavable biopolymer.

Epilepsy refers to a disabling neurological disorder featured by the long-term and unpredictable occurrence of seizures owing to abnormal excessive neuronal electrical activity and is closely linked to unresolved inflammation, oxidative stress, and hypoxia. The difficulty of accurate localization and targeted drug delivery to the lesion hinders the effective treatment of this disease. The locally activated inflammatory cells in the epileptogenic region offer a new opportunity for drug delivery to the lesion.

(1) Introduction and objective: Surgical resection plays an important role in the multidisciplinary treatment of lung cancer patients with brain metastases (BMs). Precisely distinguishing the tumor border intraoperatively to improve and maximize the extent of resection (EOR) without causing permanent neurological defects is crucial but still challenging. Therefore, we introduced our experience of utilizing sodium fluorescein (SF) in microneurosurgery of BMs from lung cancer.
