Single thermal plume in locally heated vertical soap films.

Published: October 2011

A vertical soap film is maintained by injection of a soap solution from the top. The film is then locally heated. Thermal plumes may be observed to rise in the film, depending on the magnitude of the heating and injected flows. The nearly two-dimensional nature of the system allows to visualize the motion of the plumes using an infrared camera. A model is proposed to describe the growth, emergence, and stationarity of the plumes in the film by taking into account both magnitudes of the heating ΔT and injected flow Q.

Room-temperature operation or high-operation temperature (HOT) is essential for mid-wave infrared (MWIR) optoelectronics devices providing low-cost and compact systems for numerous applications. Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as a rising candidate to enable photodetectors to operate at HOT or room temperature and develop the next-generation infrared focal plane array (FPA) imagers. Here, band-engineered heterojunctions are demonstrated to suppress dark current with well-passivated mercury telluride (HgTe) CQDs enabling room-temperature MWIR imaging by single-pixel scanning and 640 × 512 FPA sensitive thermal imaging above 250 K.

Thermal Gradient-Driven Heterogeneous Actuation of Liquid Crystal Elastomers for a Crawling Robot.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut 06269, United States.

Emerging soft robots based on liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit remarkable capabilities for large reversible shape morphing, enabling them to adapt to complex environments and perform diverse tasks such as locomotion and camouflage. Despite extensive studies, current methods for locally controlled actuation of LCE-based soft robots often involve intricate structural design, complex programming of LCEs, incorporation of multiple materials, or complex actuation methods. Here, we present a simple and efficient approach to achieve multiple deformation modes within a simply programmed LCE structure by harnessing Joule heating-induced thermal gradients across the LCE volume.

Dietary supplements are widely used among individuals exposed to hot environments, but whether their consumption confers any thermoregulatory effect is unclear. Therefore, we systematically evaluated the effect of dietary supplementation on key aspects of thermoregulation (core temperature [T] and sweating responses) in the heat. Three databases were searched in April 2024.

Cooling of Semiconductor Devices via Quantum Tunneling.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Research Laboratory of Electronics, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139, USA.

Classical transport of electrons and holes in nanoscale devices leads to heating that severely limits performance, reliability, and efficiency. In contrast, recent theory suggests that interband quantum tunneling and subsequent thermalization of carriers with the lattice results in local cooling of devices. However, internal cooling in nanoscale devices is largely unexplored.
