Aim: To find the most reproducible quantitative parameter of a standard (13)C-methacetin breath test ((13)C-MBT).

Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers (10 female, 10 male) underwent the (13)C-MBT after intake of 75 mg (13)C-methacetin p.o. on three occasions. Short- and medium-term reproducibility was assessed with paired examinations taken at an interval of 2 and 18 d (medians), respectively.

Results: The reproducibility of the 1-h cumulative (13)C recovery (AUC(0-60)), characterized by a coefficient of variation of 10%, appeared to be considerably better than the reproducibility of the maximum momentary (13)C recovery or the time of reaching it. Remarkably, as opposed to the short gap between consecutive examinations, the capacity of the liver to handle (13)C-methacetin increased slightly but statistically significantly when a repeat dose was administered after two to three weeks. Regarding the AUC(0-60), the magnitude of this fixed bias amounted to 7.5%. Neither the time gap between the repeat examinations nor the gender of the subjects affected the (13)C-MBT reproducibility.

Conclusion: (13)C-MBT is most reproducibly quantified by the cumulative (13)C recovery, but the exactitude thereof may be modestly affected by persistent stimulation of CYP1A2 on repeat examinations.

Background: Friedreich ataxia is a rare neurodegenerative disorder caused by frataxin deficiency. Both underweight and overweight occur in mitochondrial disorders, each with adverse health outcomes. We investigated the longitudinal evolution of anthropometric abnormalities in Friedreich ataxia and the hypothesis that both weight loss and weight gain are associated with faster disease progression.

Introduction: Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening condition resulting from fluid accumulation in the pericardial sac, leading to decreased cardiac output and shock. Various etiologies can cause cardiac tamponade, including liver cirrhosis, which may be induced by autoimmune hepatitis. Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic inflammatory liver disease characterized by interface hepatitis, elevated transaminase levels, autoantibodies, and increased immunoglobulin G levels.

The FAT atypical cadherin 1 (FAT1) gene is the ortholog of the fat gene and encodes the protocadherin FAT1. FAT1 belongs to the cadherin superfamily, a group of full-length membrane proteins that contain cadherin-like repeats. In various types of human cancer, FAT1 is one of the most commonly mutated genes, and is considered to be an emerging cancer biomarker and a potential target for novel therapies.

A New Method to Measure Ocular Surface Sensitivity: Repeatability and Reproducibility of the Liquid Jet Esthesiometer.

Eye Contact Lens

November 2024

School of Optometry and Vision Science (K.E., F.S., B.T., J.C., B.G.), University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia; and Department of Optics and Optometry and Vision Sciences (C.T.-E.), University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain.

Objectives: To assess the reliability of the liquid jet esthesiometer (LJA) for measurement of corneal sensitivity.

Methods: Two separate studies were conducted to assess intrasession repeatability (study 1) and intersession reproducibility (study 2) of corneal sensitivity measured using the LJA. Thirty participants (13 female and 17 male participants, age 23±6 years) participated in study 1 and another 30 (18 female and 12 male participants, 35±10 years) participated in study 2.
