Almost all the antipsychotics can cause hyperprolactinemia-related side-effects like amenorrhea. Quetiapine has been reported to have minimal propensity to cause hyperprolactinemia. We report here two cases of risperidone-induced amenorrhea, who resumed their normal cycle on switching over the medication to quetiapine.

Despite the high prevalence of hyperprolactinemia in patients receiving antipsychotic medications, its side effects are often neglected. In patients receiving risperidone, the incidence of menstrual abnormalities is relatively small. Our patient was a 44-year-old, Haitian female whose total course of hospitalization was nine months, during most of which she remained floridly psychotic with low cognitive function with waxing and waning symptoms.

Materials And Methods: The study was conducted among 289 patients who were diagnosed with schizophrenia and were on treatment with risperidone (4-8 mg/day)-based therapy for a minimum of 4 weeks. Genotyping was carried by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Objective: To investigate the effect of the Taq1A variant in the Dopamine D2 receptor gene (DRD2) and common functional genetic variants in the cytochrome P450 2D6 gene (CYP2D6) on prolactin levels in risperidone-treated boys with autism spectrum disorders and disruptive behavior disorders.
Methods: Forty-seven physically healthy 10-year-old to 19-year-old boys with autism spectrum disorders and/or disruptive behavior disorders, chronically treated (mean 52 months, range 16-126 months) with an antipsychotic, were recruited into this observational study. Prolactin levels, hyperprolactinemia, risperidone levels, and 9-hydroxyrisperidone levels were assessed and the participants were genotyped for common CYP2D6 polymorphisms and the Taq1A allele of the dopamine D2 receptor gene.

Hyperprolactinemia is a common adverse effect that occurs as a result of antipsychotic therapies, which often results in discontinuation. Empirical evidence has shown that some herbal medicines have suppressive effects on prolactin (PRL) hyperactivities. This study was designed to compare the herbal preparation called Peony-Glycyrrhiza Decoction (PGD) with bromocriptine (BMT), a dopamine agonist widely used for PRL-secreting disorders, in the treatment of risperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia.
