Protein dynamical transition at 110 K.

Proteins are known to undergo a dynamical transition at around 200 K but the underlying mechanism, physical origin, and relationship to water are controversial. Here we report an observation of a protein dynamical transition as low as 110 K. This unexpected protein dynamical transition precisely correlated with the cryogenic phase transition of water from a high-density amorphous to a low-density amorphous state. The results suggest that the cryogenic protein dynamical transition might be directly related to the two liquid forms of water proposed at cryogenic temperatures.

Molecular dynamics work on thermal conductivity of SiGe nanotubes.

Context: SiGe nanotubes (SiGeNTs) hold significant promise for applications in nanosolar cells, optoelectronic systems, and interconnects, where thermal conductivity is critical to performance. This study investigates the effects of length, diameter, temperature, and axial strain on the thermal conductivity of armchair and zigzag SiGeNTs through molecular dynamics simulations. Results indicate that thermal conductivity increases with sample length due to ballistic heat transport and decreases with temperature as phonon scattering intensifies.

The isomerization kinetics of a liquid crystalline azobenzene dimer, comprising cyanoazobenzene and naphthalene (NAZ6), were investigated at the air-water interface. The Langmuir monolayers of NAZ6 in both its and states were analyzed using surface manometry techniques. The results revealed that NAZ6 molecules in the -state displayed the coexistence of a disordered liquid-expanded phase and an ordered liquid-condensed phase, whereas no such phase transition was observed in the -state.
