Unless we fixate directly on it, it is hard to see an object among other objects. This breakdown in object recognition, called crowding, severely limits peripheral vision. The effect is more severe when objects are more similar. When observers mistake the identity of a target among flanker objects, they often report a flanker. Many have taken these flanker reports as evidence of internal substitution of the target by a flanker. Here, we ask observers to identify a target letter presented in between one similar and one dissimilar flanker letter. Simple substitution takes in only one letter, which is often the target but, by unwitting mistake, is sometimes a flanker. The opposite of substitution is pooling, which takes in more than one letter. Having taken only one letter, the substitution process knows only its identity, not its similarity to the target. Thus, it must report similar and dissimilar flankers equally often. Contrary to this prediction, the similar flanker is reported much more often than the dissimilar flanker, showing that rampant flanker substitution cannot account for most flanker reports. Mixture modeling shows that simple substitution can account for, at most, about half the trials. Pooling and nonpooling (simple substitution) together include all possible models of crowding. When observers are asked to identify a crowded object, at least half of their reports are pooled, based on a combination of information from target and flankers, rather than being based on a single letter.

Background: Virtual care (VC) for dementia in primary care settings is an important aspect of healthcare delivery in Canada. However, the evidence informing optimal and sustainable provision of VC for persons living with dementia (PLWD) and their care partners is scarce. The objectives of this study were to (1) describe the frequency of VC use, (2) identify characteristics of PLWD, care partners, and family physicians (FPs) that are associated with the use of VC, and (3) explore FPs' perceptions of barriers and facilitators to provide VC for PLWD and their care partners.

Introduction: Phencyclidine, a dissociative anesthetic with hallucinogenic effects, is commonly abused as a recreational drug. Phencyclidine analogs are compounds produced by substitutions of the phenyl and piperidine rings of phencyclidine. Illegal use of phencyclidine and its analogs has symptoms such as addiction, confusion, and increased tendencies toward violence.

A novel regioselective manganese(III)-mediated radical cascade cyclization of N-propargyl enamides with various H-phosphine oxides, H-phosphinates and H-phosphonates was developed. Mechanistic studies show that the reaction is mainly composed of the selective addition of phosphonyl radical to C≡C bond and the intramolecular 6--trig cyclization of vinyl radical. Utilizing this protocol, we successfully synthesized a diverse range of 3-phosphorylpyridines in high efficiency with good functional group compatibility and simple operation.

A simple method for constructing unsymmetrical 2-nitrobiaryls has been developed between substituted 1,4-dithiine-2-carbaldehyde and nitroolefins under metal-free conditions. To gain the advantage of the HOMO-raising effect of temporary substitutions on in situ generated dienamine intermediate, the present protocol established [4+2] benzannulation of 1,4-dithiane-tethered enals with nitroolefin. Further, easy unmasking of 1,4-dithiine units results in a benzannulation product like that of unsubstituted enals, which are difficult to access.

Herein, we present that treating -(2-oxo-2-phenylethyl) substituted 2-pyridones with styrenes in DMSO/HO at 120 °C affords 1,6-carboannulated 2-pyridone scaffolds with up to 79% yield. This protocol provides a simple and efficient method for obtaining complicated bicyclic 2-pyridones through a radical cascade reaction. Additionally, we have successfully synthesized 27 target compounds, which confirms the practicality and wide applicability of the proposed reaction.
