In this study, the influence of the geometric parameters on the optical absorption of gallium arsenide [GaAs] nanowire arrays [NWAs] has been systematically analyzed using finite-difference time-domain simulations. The calculations reveal that the optical absorption is sensitive to the geometric parameters such as diameter [D], length [L], and filling ratio [D/P], and more efficient light absorption can be obtained in GaAs NWAs than in thin films with the same thickness due to the combined effects of intrinsic antireflection and efficient excitation of resonant modes. Optimized geometric parameters are obtained as follows: D = 180 nm, L = 2 μm, and D/P = 0.5. Meanwhile, the simulation on the absorption of GaAs NWAs for oblique incidence has also been carried out. The underlying physics is discussed in this work.PACS: 81.07.Gf nanowires; 81.05.Ea III-V semiconductors; 88.40.hj efficiency and performance of solar cells; 73.50.Pz photoconduction and photovoltaic effects.

Fluorescence characterization of halophilic archaeal C50 carotenoid-bacterioruberin extracts was investigated using UV/Vis and steady-state fluorescence spectrophotometry in solvents with different polarity. Different extracts showed maximum absorption and fluorescence wavelengths between 369-536 nm and 540-569 nm. Stokes' shifts varied between 50-79 nm depending on the solvent.

Purpose: To study choroidal thickness (CT) and luminal areas of choroidal vessels in the setting of fovea-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).

Methods: Twenty-seven eyes with RRD were prospectively studied before and after pars plana vitrectomy and SF6 tamponade, using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). CT was measured pre- and postoperatively both subfoveally and in attached macular areas.

The development of optical sensors for label-free quantification of cell parameters has numerous uses in the biomedical arena. However, using current optical probes requires the laborious collection of sufficiently large datasets that can be used to calibrate optical probe signals to true metabolite concentrations. Further, most practitioners find it difficult to confidently adapt black box chemometric models that are difficult to troubleshoot in high-stakes applications such as biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Constructing a solid solution is an effective strategy for regulating the properties of composite organic semiconductors. However, there presents significant challenges in fabrication and understanding of organic solid-solution semiconductors. In this study, infinite solid-solution semiconductors are successfully achieved by integrating rod-like organic molecules, thereby overcoming the limitations of current organic composite semiconductors.
