Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms show a range of morphologic features and biological risk. At one end of the spectrum, high-grade adenocarcinomas are cytologically malignant with infiltrative invasion, lymph node metastases, and behavior similar to that of extra-appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinomas. At the other end, mucinous neoplasms confined to the mucosa are uniformly benign.

Temporal bone microanatomy is a common source of consternation for radiologists. Serpentine foramina, branching cranial nerves, and bony canals containing often clinically relevant but often miniscule arterial branches may all cause confusion, even among radiologists familiar with temporal bone imaging. In some cases, the tiniest structures may be occult or poorly visualized, even on thin-slice computed tomography (CT) images.

Hyponatraemia is common and often a source of confusion for junior doctors. It is infrequently dangerous, but when it is, is a medical emergency and requires urgent treatment to avoid life-threatening cerebral oedema. Treatment of acute hyponatraemia is also potentially hazardous; it is therefore important to be able to recognise when urgent management is indicated, and to investigate appropriately.
