Nurse leaders in North Carolina convened the Statewide Summit for Creating the Future of Nursing and Health Care in North Carolina on April 11, 2011. This article summarizes the summit and lays out the way ahead for implementing, in North Carolina, recommendations from the report on the future of nursing recently published by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (IOM). A synopsis of the commentaries composing the policy forum of this issue of the NCMJ follows, linking them to the IOM report.

Vitamin D is associated with sleep quality and duration, but it's unclear whether vitamin D status influences sleep variability. Therefore, we sought to determine whether vitamin D status was associated with sleep variability in healthy adults. We assessed objective sleep, including timing and duration standard deviation () using the Philips Actiwatch Spectrum and subjective sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in 130 adults.

This paper addresses achieving the high time-bandwidth product necessary for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) target detection and localization in complex multipath environments. Time bandwidth product is often limited by dynamic environments and platform maneuvers. This paper introduces data-driven wideband focusing methods for passive sonar that optimize parameterized unitary matrices to align signal subspaces across the frequency band without relying on wave propagation models which are subject to mismatch in complex multipath environments.

Foremost in the design of new β-lactamase inhibitors (BLIs) are the boronic acid transition state inhibitors (BATSIs). Two highly potent BATSIs being developed are S02030 and MB076 strategically designed to be active against cephalosporinases and carbapenemases, especially KPC. When combined with cefepime, S02030 and MB076 demonstrated potent antimicrobial activity against laboratory and clinical strains of expressing a variety of class A and class C β-lactamases, including and .
