In "The Reunion Process: A New Focus in Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy," by Dr. Sandler (see record 2007-09422-001), addresses posttreatment relapse by a new therapeutic strategy based on attachment theory and recent research findings concerning the neurobiology of memory. This strategy involves the discovery or creation of positive childhood maternal attachment memories as a method of overcoming the dominance of negative memories. Dr. Sandler makes assumptions about what can be achieved in short-term therapies, the pace of therapeutic change, as well as the role in treatment outcome of techniques versus therapist skill and relationship factors. These assumptions are not supported by psychotherapy research. While the attempt to use new discoveries from neurobiology to guide the development of therapeutic techniques is admirable, the author appears to engage in a fair amount of speculative theoretical reductionism in attempting to explain the eventually positive outcome of the case he presents. I offer a more parsimonious psychological explanation, which is consistent with the short-term dynamic psychotherapy theory of change. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).

Introduction: Accurate prediction of knee biomechanics during total knee replacement (TKR) surgery is crucial for optimal outcomes. This study investigates the application of machine learning (ML) techniques for real-time prediction of knee joint mechanics.

Methods: A validated finite element (FE) model of the lower limb was used to generate a dataset of knee joint kinematics, kinetics, and contact mechanics.

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy for Complex, Chronic, and Treatment-Resistant Conditions.

Centre for Emotions and Health, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Over the past 50 years, intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) has been developed, implemented, and evaluated with respect to the treatment of a broad spectrum of complex, chronic, and treatment-resistant conditions. This therapy was developed specifically to treat a range of patients, including those who are highly defensive, those who experience the repression of emotions, and those who have cognitive-perceptual disruptions along with primitive defenses. These three groups of patients are characterized by patterns of attachment trauma and deficits related to neglect.

Rate equations and numerical simulations relying on complex mathematical and physical principles are typically used to model directly modulated lasers (DMLs) but have difficulty simulating dynamic DML behavior in real-time under varying conditions due to their high complexity. Here, we introduce a data-driven deep learning method to model DMLs, aiming to achieve high accuracy with reduced computational complexity. This approach employs bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) enhanced by advanced feature recalibration and nonlinear fitting techniques.

Steatohepatitis-induced vascular niche alterations promote melanoma metastasis.

Cancer Metab

January 2025

Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology, University Medical Center and Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Theodor-Kutzer-Ufer 1-3, Mannheim, 68167, Germany.

Background: In malignant melanoma, liver metastases significantly reduce survival, even despite highly effective new therapies. Given the increase in metabolic liver diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), this study investigated the impact of liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LSEC)-specific alterations in MASLD/MASH on hepatic melanoma metastasis.

Methods: Mice were fed a choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet for ten weeks to induce MASH-associated liver fibrosis, or a CDAA diet or a high fat diet (HFD) for shorter periods of time to induce early steatosis-associated alterations.

Heatstroke characteristics and meteorological conditions in Hefei, China: thresholds and driving factors.

BMC Public Health

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Cities Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in Shanghai (CMACC), Shanghai, 200092, China.

Background: Due to climate change and rapid urbanization, the frequency of heatwave events in East China has increased considerably since the 21st century, which has a considerable influence on human health, such as heatstroke. However, few studies have been conducted in this region on the relationship between heatstroke and meteorological conditions. To address this point, this study aimed to analyze the characteristics of heatstroke and their relationship with meteorological conditions in Hefei, China.
