A review of the current medical literature for the use of polypropylene (PP) mesh for vaginally performed prolapse repair, including only those studies reporting prospective, randomized, controlled trials compared with native tissue repairs was undertaken. Five full manuscript publications and 4 studies still in abstract form were all consistent with PP mesh producing better anatomical results for cystocele repair, but when functional results in terms of the patient's quality of life are considered, no significant difference is found between PP mesh and native tissue repairs. PP mesh use results in better anatomical results in the short term but at a cost of repeated surgeries because of erosions and other complications. Patients do not recognize any added benefit from the use of these prostheses in their daily lives.

We present the results of a 1-year study that quantified salt levels in stormwater, soils, and plant tissues from 14 stormwater detention basins across Northern VA in an above-average snow year. We characterize (1) the level of salt stress plants experience, (2) the extent to which current plant communities feature salt tolerant species, and (3) the capacity of these species to phytoremediate soils and reduce the impacts of deicer and anti-icer use. Our results suggest that detention basin vegetation experience a range of salt stress levels that depend on drainage area type (roads: moderate to high > parking lots: low to moderate > pervious areas: none).

Although significant progress has been made in understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms of component cells of bone, revealing their spatial organization and interactions in native bone tissue microenvironment is crucial for advancing precision medicine, as they govern fundamental signaling pathways and functional dependencies among various bone cells. Opioid agonist ligands bind opioid receptors and stimulate downstream signaling cascades for various biological processes including pain and reward. Historically, before cloning the receptors, muscle contraction assays using isolated organ tissues were used followed by radiolabel ligand binding assays on native tissues. Upon cloning of the opioid G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), cell assays using transfected opioid receptor DNA plasmids became the standard practice including S-GTPγS functional and cAMP based assays.

Background: Rotator cuff repairs may fail because of compromised blood supply, suture anchor pullout, or poor fixation to bone. To augment the repairs and promote healing of the tears, orthobiologics, such a platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and biologic scaffolds have been applied with mixed results. Adipose allograft matrix (AAM), which recruits native cells to damaged tissues, may also be a potential treatment for rotator cuff tears.
