Pair creation constrains superluminal neutrino propagation.

The OPERA collaboration claims that muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 17.5 GeV travel 730 km from CERN to the Gran Sasso at a speed exceeding that of light by about 7.5 km/s or 25 ppm. However, we show that superluminal neutrinos may lose energy rapidly via the bremsstrahlung of electron-positron pairs (ν → ν + e- + e+). For the claimed superluminal velocity and at the stated mean energy, we find that most of the neutrinos would have suffered several pair emissions en route, causing the beam to be depleted of higher energy neutrinos. This presents a significant challenge to the superluminal interpretation of the OPERA data. Furthermore, we appeal to Super-Kamiokande and IceCube data to establish strong new limits on the superluminal propagation of high-energy neutrinos.

Monogamy relations for relativistically causal correlations.

Nat Commun

Département de Physique Appliquée, Université de Genève, Genève, Switzerland.

Non-signalling conditions encode minimal requirements that any (quantum) systems must satisfy in order to be consistent with special relativity. Recent works have argued that in scenarios involving more than two parties, correlations compatible with relativistic causality do not have to satisfy all possible non-signalling conditions but only a subset of them. Here we show that correlations satisfying only this subset of constraints have to satisfy highly non-local monogamy relations between the effects of space-like separated random variables.

The transmission and reflection spectra of a linear chain comprising superconducting split-ring resonators operating at 6 GHz, with staggered coupling strength are investigated. The collective mode and the associated transmission and reflection on resonances can be fully analyzed by employing finite-element simulations focused on the unit cell structure and an effective hopping model. Robust coupling energies, equivalent to approximately 4% of the resonant frequency, enable significant transmission through the collective modes.

Signal growth in a pure time-modulated transmission line and the loss effect.

We present the first comprehensive study for signal growth in transmission lines (TL) with purely time-modulated characteristic impedance (infinite superluminality). This study pioneers the investigation into the effects of varying the cell's electrical length and the impact of loss on momentum bandgaps and amplification levels. It also thoroughly examines how time-modulated transmission line truncation by a static load influences the sensitivity of amplification gain to the relative phase between the incoming signal and modulation, comparing these findings with the case of parametric amplification.

Microquasars are laboratories for the study of jets of relativistic particles produced by accretion onto a spinning black hole. Microquasars are near enough to allow detailed imaging of spatial features across the multiwavelength spectrum. The recent extension measurement of the spatial morphology of a microquasar, SS 433, to TeV gamma rays localizes the acceleration of electrons at shocks in the jet far from the black hole.
