A new series of pyrano[4,3-b]pyran 4a-i and pyrano[3,2-c]chromene 6a-r derivatives bearing a 2-thiophenoxyquinoline nucleus were synthesized by reaction of 2-(4-(un)-substituted thiophenoxy)quinoline-3-carbaldehydes 2a-i with 6-methyl-4-hydroxypyran-2-one 3 and 4-hydroxy-6-(un)-substituted-2H-chromen-2-one 5a-b respectively and malononitrile at room temperature in the presence of KOH as a basic catalyst. All the compounds were screened against three Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium tetani), three Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae) and two fungi (Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus) using the broth microdilution MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) method. Upon antimicrobial screening, it was observed that the majority of the compounds were found to be active against Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium tetani and Candida albicans as compared to standard drugs.

Chiral Aldehyde/Palladium Catalysis Enables Asymmetric Branched-Selective Ring-Opening Functionalization of Methylenecyclopropanes with Amino Acid Esters.

Achieving catalytic asymmetric functionalization of methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) by selective C-C bond cleavage is a notable challenge due to the intricate reaction partners involved. In this work, we report that chiral aldehyde/palladium combined catalysis enables the asymmetric functionalization of MCPs with NH-unprotected amino acid esters. This reaction proceeds through a regiospecific branched ring-opening mechanism, resulting in optically active α,α-disubstituted α-amino acid esters bearing nonconjugated terminal alkene units.

Most synthetic hydrogels are formed through radical polymerization to yield a homogenous covalent meshwork. In contrast, natural hydrogels form through mechanisms involving both covalent assembly and supramolecular interactions. In this communication, we expand the capabilities of covalent poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) networks through co-assembly of supramolecular peptide nanofibers.

Introduction: Measurement of repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) is necessary to realize the full potential of positron emission tomography (PET). Several studies have evaluated the reproducibility of PET using 18F-FDG, the most common PET tracer used in oncology, but similar studies using other PET tracers are scarce. Even fewer assess agreement and R&R with statistical methods designed explicitly for the task.

Division of Biomedical Convergence, College of Biomedical Science, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon-si, 24341, Republic of Korea.

Background: Pain reduction, immunomodulation, and cartilage repair are key therapeutic goals in osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of porcine cartilage acellularized matrix (pCAM) derived from naive tissue and compared it with the synthetic material polynucleotides (PN) for OA treatment.

Methods: pCAM was produced from porcine cartilage through physicochemical processing.

We report herein the synthesis of an unprecedented isomer of perylene, dicyclohepta[cd,fg]-as-indacene bearing two phenyl groups (1-Ph) by the nickel-mediated intramolecular homocoupling of a 4,4'-biazulene derivative (2). The X-ray crystallographic analysis and theoretical calculations revealed that 1-Ph adopts a unique helically twisted geometry although the local aromaticity of azulene moieties was preserved. The double covalent linkage of the two azulene skeletons imparts significant orbital interaction, which affords near-infrared (NIR) absorption (up to 1720 nm) and remarkable redox behaviors despite its closed-shell electronic structure.
