Background: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been widely applied to climacteric women to improve various climacteric symptoms. Purpose of the present study is to reveal the effect of topical HRT with estradiol on skin surface texture (SST), a major determinant of skin appearance.

Methods: Estradiol 1.08 mg in gel was topically applied daily to the upper limbs of menopausal or ovariectomized women for 8 weeks. Thereafter, lower-dose estradiol 0.54 mg or placebo gel was applied for a further 16 weeks. Images of SST in the flexor forearm and cheek were captured by video microscope; fineness of texture as revealed by the number of ridges was calculated by image analysis.

Results: Increase in fineness of texture by topical HRT during 8 weeks was observed not only in the forearm, where estradiol was applied, but also in the cheek, an unapplied site. In women receiving topical estradiol, the fine texture tended to decline slightly but nonsignificantly during the consecutive 16-week low-dose HRT period whereas it was markedly declined in those receiving placebo gel.

Conclusion: Topical HRT can improve age-associated decline of fineness of SST.

Extended Chemical and Microbial Stability of Various Hormones in Phytobase and HRT Heavy Cream Bases.

Int J Pharm Compd

August 2024

Compounding Support Services, Fagron Academy, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The 2023 updates to USP chapter <800> and major revisions to USP <795> have made previous studies for extended beyond use dates (BUD) inadequate, prompting a need for new evidence in compounding.
  • Researchers conducted stability indicating testing and antimicrobial effectiveness testing (AET) on 12 combinations of topical and transdermal hormone preparations using two cream vehicles, Phytobase™ and HRT Heavy™, resulting in a total of 24 tested formulas.
  • The study evaluates the appropriateness of Phytobase™ and HRT Heavy™ for compounded hormone therapy (CHT) and examines their compatibility with various hormones like estriol, estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, and dehydroepiandroster

Centre for Dermatology Research, Division of Musculoskeletal and Dermatological Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, The University of Manchester and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, Manchester, UK.

Background: Sex hormone changes during menopausal transition contribute to declining skin health. However, how menopause and its treatment by hormone replacement therapy (HRT) impact the skin barrier and immune system is unclear.

Objectives: To examine how menopause and HRT affect the skin barrier and immune cell composition in postmenopausal women following irritant challenge.

Specific Aim: Provide an overview of the literature addressing major areas pertinent to pain in transgender persons and to identify areas of primary relevance for future research.

Methods: A team of scholars that have previously published on different areas of related research met periodically though zoom conferencing between April 2021 and February 2023 to discuss relevant literature with the goal of providing an overview on the incidence, phenotype, and mechanisms of pain in transgender patients. Review sections were written after gathering information from systematic literature searches of published or publicly available electronic literature to be compiled for publication as part of a topical series on gender and pain in the Frontiers in Pain Research.
