Concentric needle jitter on stimulated frontalis and extensor digitorum in 20 myasthenia gravis patients.

Published: December 2011

Introduction: Our objective was to study jitter parameters using a concentric needle electrode (CNE) in the extensor digitorum (ED) and frontalis (FR) muscles.

Methods: Twenty myasthenia gravis (MG) patients, mean age 44.5 years, were studied. Percutaneous (FR) and intramuscular needle (ED) stimulation approaches were used. Jitter was expressed as the mean consecutive difference (MCD). The filter settings were from 1000 HZ to 10 kHZ.

Results: Abnormal MCD was found in 85% for both ED and FR and in 90% when combining the two muscles. An abnormal percentage of outliers was found in 90% for ED and 85% for FR. The mean MCD did not show a difference for ED and FR, but the percentage of outliers and blocking were higher in FR. Abnormality was found in 93.7% (generalized) and in 75% (ocular) of MG cases. For ED outliers abnormality was greater than the MCD.

Conclusion: CNE jitter is reliable for investigation of MG, although borderline findings should be judged with caution.

This study aims to compare two different single-puncture arthrocentesis (SPA) Type 2 techniques, the Y-shaped cannula and the concentric needle methods, in terms of intraoperative parameters. In the study, data from 32 unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis procedures, including procedure duration (seconds), the number of cannula relocations, and procedural difficulty (evaluated using a visual analog scale), were retrospectively analyzed. The Y-shaped cannula technique was found to significantly reduce procedure duration (284.

Can protrusive movements during TMJ arthrocentesis improve final results?

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of single-puncture techniques in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis for the management of disk displacement without reduction (DDwoR). A total of thirty-six patients diagnosed with DDwoR were randomly and blindly assigned to two treatment groups (N = 18 each): Group 1 underwent TMJ arthrocentesis using a concentric needle-cannula system with protrusive movements, while Group 2 received TMJ arthrocentesis with a concentric needle-cannula system but without protrusive movements. The following variables were recorded and compared between the groups: maximal interincisal distance (MID - mm), patient pain perception (visual analogue scale - VAS [0-10]), and operation duration (OP - minutes).

Ultrasound Evaluation of Upper Limb Sublesional Muscle Morphology in Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Muscle Nerve

January 2025

International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Introduction/aims: Upper limb paralysis is arguably the most limiting consequence of cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI). There is limited knowledge regarding the early structural changes of muscles implicated in grasp/pinch function and upper extremity nerve transfer surgeries. We evaluated: (1) muscle size and echo intensity (EI) in subacute cSCI (2-6 months) and (2) the influence of lower motor neuron (LMN) damage on these ultrasound parameters.

Objectives: Jitter analysis with concentric needle electrode of the thoracic 9 (T9) paraspinal muscle (PM), where the needle EMG examination at rest is difficult, was performed in both amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and the controls.

Methods: For the T9 PM, both upper limit for mean and individual mean consecutive difference (MCD) values and spike numbers were calculated according to jitter values of pairs from controls. In addition to the descriptive statistics, differences between two groups and T9 PM needle EMG and jitter analysis findings of patients were compared (p = 0.
