Background And Aim: Environmental and genetic factors play a role in the pathogenesis and natural history of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the association between tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α gene promoter polymorphism at sites -308 and -238 and NAFLD susceptibility.

Methods: We performed an extensive search of relevant studies and made a meta-analysis, including eight studies with 837 NAFLD cases and 990 controls in the association between TNF-α -308 polymorphism and NAFLD; and seven studies with 771 cases and 787 controls in TNF-α -238 polymorphism.

Results: The combined results showed that there was a significant difference in TNF-α-238 genotype distribution between NAFLD and control based on all studies (GA/AA vs GG [odds ratio = 2.06, 95% confidence interval = 1.58-2.69, P < 0.000,01]). However, the combined results based on all studies showed there was no evidence of association of TNF-α-308 genotype distribution between NAFLD cases and controls (GA/AA vs GG [odds ratio = 1.08, 95% confidence interval = 0.82-1.42, P = 0.60]). When stratifying for race, the significant results did not change materially compared with whole populations.

Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested that TNF-α gene promoter polymorphism at position -238 but not -308 might be a risk factor for NAFLD.

Transcriptomics is a powerful approach for functional genomics and systems biology, yet it can also be used for genetic part discovery. Here, we derive constitutive and light-regulated promoters directly from transcriptomics data of the basidiomycete red yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous CBS 6938 (anamorph Phaffia rhodozyma) and use these promoters with other genetic elements to create a modular synthetic biology parts collection for this organism. Electronic address:

Leaf angle is a major agronomic trait that determines plant architecture, which directly affects rice planting density, photosynthetic efficiency, and yield. The plant phytohormones brassinosteroids (BRs) and the MAPK signaling cascade are known to play crucial roles in regulating the leaf angle, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we report a rice WRKY family transcription factor gene, OsWRKY72, which positively regulates leaf angle by affecting lamina joint development and BR signaling.

Background: Neuroblastoma (NB), the most prevalent solid tumor in children, arises from sympathetic nervous system and accounts for 15% of pediatric cancer mortality. This malignancy exhibits substantial genetic and clinical heterogeneity, thus complicating treatment strategies. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1), a key enzyme catalyzing polyADP-ribosylation (PARylation), plays critical roles in various cellular processes, and contributes to tumorigenesis and aggressiveness.

The genus Flaveria has been studied extensively as a model for the evolution of C photosynthesis. Thus far, molecular analyses in this genus have been limited due to a dearth of genomic information and the lack of a rapid and efficient transformation protocol. Since their development, Agrobacterium-mediated transient transformation protocols have been instrumental in understanding many biological processes in a range of plant species.

Transgenic tomato strategies targeting whitefly eggs from apoplastic or ovary-directed proteins.

BMC Plant Biol

Department of Chemical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, 16802, USA.

Background: Transgenic plants expressing proteins that target the eggs of the ubiquitous plant pest Bemisia tabaci (whitefly) could be an effective insecticide strategy. Two approaches for protein delivery are assessed using the mCherry reporter gene in transgenic tomato plants, while accommodating autofluorescence in both the plant, phloem-feeding whitefly and pedicle-attached eggs.

Results: Both transgenic strategies were segregated to homozygous genotype using digital PCR.
