Bioconjugated gel particles that have complexes composed of lectin concanavalin A (ConA) and 2-glucosyloxyethyl methacrylate (GEMA) were synthesized by the surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA), poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA), GEMA, and modified-ConA with polymerizable groups. The resultant gel particles having GEMA-ConA complexes (GEMA-ConA gel particles) were colloidally stable in a phosphate buffer solution and had a diameter of approximately 750nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements implied that GEMA-ConA gel particles have core-shell structures consisting of a hydrophobic core of DEAEMA and a hydrophilic shell of GEMA and PEGDMA containing ConA. GEMA-ConA gel particles underwent a change in size in response to glucose in a phosphate buffer solution. The swelling ratio of GEMA-ConA gel particles gradually increased with an increase in the glucose concentration. On the other hand, the swelling ratio of GEMA-ConA gel particles remained unchanged in a phosphate buffer solution containing galactose. The glucose-responsive swelling of GEMA-ConA gel particles was induced by the dissociation of GEMA-ConA complexes acting as reversible cross-links, because free glucose behaved as an inhibitor of GEMA-ConA complexes. These results indicate that GEMA-ConA gel particles can recognize glucose selectively and undergo changes in size in response to the glucose concentration. The smart functions of glucose-responsive gel particles can provide tools for constructing self-regulated drug delivery systems and sensor systems useful for treating diabetes.

Unlabelled: The effects of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) (400-650 MPa) and holding temperature (25-50 °C) in thermally assisted HHP processing on multi-scale structure of starch (granule, crystalline and molecular), techno-functional properties, and digestibility of sorghum starch (SS) were evaluated. Response surface methodology has verified that the process impact on the modification of SS was dependent primarily on the pressure level. As HHP increased, processed SS progressively lost their granular structure and Maltese cross, indicating gradual structural disorder within the granules.

Developing hydrogels with high conductivity and toughness a facile strategy is important yet challenging. Herein, we proposed a new strategy to develop conductive hydrogels by growing metal dendrites. Water-soluble Sn ions were soaked into the gel and then converted to Sn dendrites an electrochemical reaction; the excessive Sn ions were finally removed by water dialysis, accompanied by dramatic shrinkage of the gel.

The ternary complex effectively prevents droplet aggregation, Ostwald ripening, and phase separation through its gel network, thereby demonstrating its capability in bioactive compound delivery. In this work, the influence of varying chickpea protein isolate (CPI) levels on the microstructure, gel characteristics, stability and functional properties of grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) and konjac gum (KGM) stabilized ternary complexes was investigated. Visual appearance indicated the formation of a non-stratified ternary complex as the CPI enhanced to 3-4 %.

The study aimed to develop a superhydrophobic coating on the aluminium alloy 2024-T3 surface. The desired surface roughness and low surface energy were achieved with SiO nanoparticles, synthesised via the Stöber method and modified with alkyl silane (AS) or perfluoroalkyl silane (FAS). To enhance particle adhesion to the alloy substrate, nanoparticles were incorporated into a hybrid sol-gel coating composed of tetraethyl orthosilicate, methyl methacrylate, and 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane.

To achieve resourceful utilization of dredged sludge, lightweight treatment was performed on sludge from Xunsi River in Wuhan using fly ash, cement, and expanded polystyrene (EPS) particles. Density tests and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted on the composite stabilized sludge lightweight soil to determine the optimal mix ratio for high-quality roadbed fill material with low self-weight and high strength. Subsequently, microstructural tests, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were conducted.
