Aim: To study possible association between three single nucleotide polymorphisms (-597G/A, -572C/G and -174G/C) of interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene promoter and breast cancer.

Methods: Genomic DNA was isolated from the venous blood leukocytes from 176 unrelated patients with breast cancer and 200 healthy unrelated females (control group). Polymorphisms of -597G/A, -572C/G and -174G/C, were genotyped by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP). SPSS 11.5 software was employed for statistical analysis and the association of IL-6 polymorphisms with breast cancer was evaluated by x(2); test.

Results: There was significant differences in both allele and genotype frequencies of -572C/G in case group compared with control group. The allele G of -572C/G was significantly higher in cancer patients than the controls(x(2);=15.438, P<0.01).

Conclusion: There is an association between -572C/G polymorphism and breast cancer risk. The females with G allele of -572C/G are susceptible to breast cancer compared with non-carrying females.

Light signal regulates endoreduplication and tomato fruit expansion through the SlPIF1a-SlTLFP8-SlCDKB2 module.

Light serves as an energy source for cell division and expansion during fruit development. Cell expansion significantly influences fruit size and is closely linked to endoreduplication, a unique cell cycle variation characterized by DNA replication without cytokinesis. Paradoxically, under conditions of ample photosynthates, light signaling suppresses cell expansion.

The LIM-domain-only protein LMO2 and its binding partner LDB1 are differentially required for class switch recombination.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

The LIM-domain-only protein LMO2 interacts with LDB1 in context-dependent multiprotein complexes and plays key roles in erythropoiesis and T cell leukemogenesis, but whether they have any roles in B cells is unclear. Through a CRISPR/Cas9-based loss-of-function screening, we identified LMO2 and LDB1 as factors for class switch recombination (CSR) in murine B cells. LMO2 contributes to CSR at least in part by promoting end joining of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and inhibiting end resection.

Background: Differential DNA methylation in the promoter region of tumour suppressor genes leads to gene function silencing.

Materials And Methods: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the salivary promoter methylation of EDNRB, MGMT and TIMP3 genes in H&NC patients (n = 100), premalignant lesions patients (n = 25) and healthy controls (n = 50). Blood and saliva samples were collected from all three groups and 20 concomitant tumour tissues were collected from the H&NC patients.

Laboratory evolution in enables rapid catabolism of a model lignin-derived aromatic dimer.

Appl Environ Microbiol

Biosciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA.

Lignin contains a variety of interunit linkages, leading to a range of potential decomposition products that can be used as carbon and energy sources by microbes. β-O-4 linkages are the most common in native lignin, and associated catabolic pathways have been well characterized. However, the fate of the mono-aromatic intermediates that result from β-O-4 dimer cleavage has not been fully elucidated.
