The directivity of the quasi-static component (QSC) is quantitatively investigated for evaluating the orientation of a micro-crack buried in a thin solid plate using the numerical simulation method. Based on the bilinear stress-strain constitutive model, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) is built for investigating the nonlinear interaction between primary Lamb waves and the micro-crack. When the primary Lamb waves at A0 mode impinge on the micro-crack, under the modulation of the contact acoustic nonlinearity (CAN), the micro-crack itself will induce QSC.

In this paper, we demonstrate that torsional surface elastic waves can propagate along the curved surface of a metamaterial elastic rod (cylinder) embedded in a conventional elastic medium. The crucial parameter of the metamaterial rod is its elastic compliance s44(1)ω, which varies as a function of frequency ω analogously to the dielectric function εω in Drude's model of metals. As a consequence, the elastic compliance s44(1)ω can take negative values s44(1)ω<0 as a function of frequency ω.

A simple pore microstructure of parallel, identical, and inclined smooth-walled slits in a rigid solid, for which prediction of its geometrical and acoustic properties is straightforward, can yield useful sound absorption. This microstructure should be relatively amenable to 3D printing. Discrepancies between measurements and predictions of normal incidence sound absorption spectra of 3D printed vertical and slanted slit pore samples have been attributed to the rough surfaces of the slit walls and uneven slit cross-sections perpendicular to the printing direction.

Modified basalt microfiber-reinforced polyurethane elastomer composites were prepared by a semi-prepolymer method with two different silane coupling agents (KH550 and KH560) in this study. Infrared spectroscopy was used to quantify the degree of microphase separation and analyze the formation of hydrogen bonding in polyurethane. The interfacial surface and the morphology of fibers and composites from tensile fracture were examined by a scanning electron microscope.

Wind-induced currents are the major forces responsible for sediment resuspension and transport in micro-tidal bays. To reveal the impact of wind-induced residual currents on the sediment flux, in-situ measurements using acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) were conducted at two mooring stations in a heavily contaminated, micro-tidal Onsan Bay. During the mooring period, the suspended sediments at both stations were transported seaward (landward) at the surface (bottom) layer mainly through the residual currents (mean-flow flux F: > 70 % of the total flux).
