The NHS community services in my local area are offering free health checks. My invitation letter offered me a choice - I could take the enclosed form to my GP, get another form and go to a phlebotomy clinic, then wait 2 weeks and go back to my GP for the blood test result and the health check; or alternatively, I could go to my local pharmacy, have a blood test and assessment, all in one visit. I thought 'no contest, I am going to the pharmacy for my health check!'

The Utility of Cerebrospinal Fluid Analysis in Guiding Management of Infants Exposed to Syphilis in Utero.

Pediatr Infect Dis J

March 2025

Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, University of California, Davis Children's Hospital, Sacramento, California.

Background: Syphilis is re-emerging, with recent increases in congenital infections. While cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) evaluation can inform management, specimen collection requires technical skill and the interpretation of indices is nuanced. We sought to understand the practical value of CSF indices as an evaluation tool among neonates exposed to syphilis in utero.

Background And Objectives: Medical clearance for return to play (RTP) after sports-related concussion is based on clinical assessment. It is unknown whether brain physiology has entirely returned to preinjury baseline at the time of clearance. In this longitudinal study, we assessed whether concussed individuals show functional and structural MRI brain changes relative to preinjury levels that persist beyond medical clearance.

Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease (TBDs) caused by Anaplasma spp. In areas where TBDs are endemic, it is crucial to consider the animals' immunological status in relation to these diseases. The true prevalence of bovine anaplasmosis, the percentage of animals with protective antibodies against this TBD, and the diagnostic characteristics of three tests (multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR), competitive-inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA), and blood smear (BS)) were estimated using a Bayesian approach.

Purpose: To develop of a novel computed tomography (CT) severity score for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and evaluate its correlation with disease severity and adverse outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective study included 37 patients diagnosed with HFRS from January 2012 to December 2023 who had available clinical laboratory and abdominal CT data during the acute phase. The CT severity score (range 0-5) was based on perirenal fat stranding, pararenal fascia thickening, anterior pararenal space fat stranding, ascites, and pleural effusion.

As an environmental estrogen biomarker, the yolk precursor, vitellogenin (Vtg) is widely used in the assessment of estrogen pollution in aquatic environment. Currently, the detection of Vtg in plasma is mainly achieved by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method based on Vtg antibodies. However, due to differences in the immunological epitopes of Vtg from various species, Vtg antibodies have low universality.
