Chiral bis-phosphoric acid 1 was designed to identify a new class of structural features in chiral Brønsted acid catalysts. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the single atropisomer 1, bearing S axial chirality at 3,3'-biaryl substituents on (R)-binaphthyl and intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the two phosphoric acid moieties. The newly designed bis-phosphoric acid 1 was evaluated in the Diels-Alder reaction of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes 4 with 1-N-acylamino-1,3-butadienes 3. After systematic variation of the catalyst substituents, as well as the N-acyl substituents of 1,3-butadiene, the use of an N-Cbz amidodiene 3a in the presence of bis-phosphoric acid 1e with a 2,4,6-tri-isopropylphenyl group was found to be optimal to yield the 1S,6R enantiomeric product 5aa in a Diels-Alder reaction of acrolein (4a). Application of this method to substituted substrates was found to be an efficient approach to the enantioselective synthesis of 3- and 3,6-substituted cyclic formylcarbamates 5. The specific character as well as the utility of 1e was further established by comparing its enantioselectivity, absolute stereochemistry, and catalytic efficiency with those of mono-phosphoric acid 2.

A hydrogen bonding network in chiral Brønsted acid catalysts is important for the construction of a chiral cavity and the enhancement of catalytic activity. In this regard, we developed a highly enantioselective aza-Friedel-Crafts reaction of indoles and pyrroles with acyclic α-ketimino esters in the presence of a chiral -symmetric BINOL-derived bis(phosphoric acid) catalyst. The desired alkylation products with chiral quaternary carbon centers were obtained in high yields with high enantioselectivities on up to a 1.

Despite the significant progress of the enantioselective reaction using chiral catalysts, the enantioselective nucleophilic substitution reaction at the chiral sp -hybridized carbon atom of a racemic electrophile has not been largely explored. Herein, we report the enantioconvergent propargylic substitution reaction of racemic propargylic alcohols with thiols using chiral bis-phosphoric acid as the chiral Brønsted acid catalyst. The substitution products were formed in high yields with high enantioselectivities in most cases.

Chiral - and -symmetric BINOL-derived bis(phosphoric acid) catalysts, which have OP([double bond, length as m-dash]O)(OH)/OP([double bond, length as m-dash]O)(OH)(OR) moieties at the 2,2'-positions, were developed and used for the enantioselective aza-Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2-methoxyfuran with α-ketimino esters for the first time. The intramolecular conjugated double hydrogen bond network is a key to increasing the Brønsted acidity and preventing deactivation of the catalysts. Highly functionalized α-amino acid derivatives with a chiral quaternary carbon center could be transformed into versatile optically active - and -heterocycles and an α-aryl-substituted serine.

We describe the straightforward synthesis of a series of bis-phosphoric acids (R,R)-1 a-d, featuring two chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-phosphoric acid units that are tethered by rigid, π-conjugated linkers. The nature of the linker has a profound influence on the properties of the bis-phosphoric acids, such as their self-association behavior and their interaction with metal ions. This led to the identification of one preferred bis-phosphoric acid (R,R)-1 d, which shows selective fluorescence quenching in the presence of ferric ions (Fe ).

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathodes of fuel cells significantly hampers fuel cell performance. Therefore, the development of high-performance, non-precious-metal catalysts as alternatives to noble metal Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts is highly desirable for the large-scale commercialization of fuel cells. TiO2 -grafted copper complexes deposited on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) form stable and efficient electrocatalysts for the ORR.
