Single and combined effects of polymorphisms in the 5'-noncoding region of the bovine growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene on the traits related to meat production were examined in Polish Black-and-White (BW; Friesian) cattle. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the P1 promoter region were analysed. One-hundred and fifty young bulls were included in the study. The traits analysed were daily weight gain, feed intake and conversion, and carcass parameters. Individual SNPs had no effect on growth rates, feed consumption and conversion but showed marked effect on carcass composition traits. The (-/-) genotype at RFLP-AluI appeared favorable for weight of carcass, carcass dressing percentage, and weight of lean in valuable cuts. Animals with the RFLP-NsiI (+/+) genotype seemed better for most of the carcass parameters. In addition, statistically significant associations were found between combined GHR genotypes and feed consumption, carcass weight and dimensions.

Article Synopsis
  • H9N2 avian influenza and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) are key avian respiratory viruses that can co-infect poultry.
  • A new method using fluorescent quantitative RT-PCR was developed to simultaneously detect H9N2 and IBV with high specificity and sensitivity in clinical samples.
  • The method was tested on 254 samples, with a 98.82% positivity rate for both viruses, providing a reliable tool for diagnosis and research in poultry health.

Multifunctional ORF3 protein of hepatitis E virus.

Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, Yangling, Shaanxi, China.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that is transmitted primarily through the fecal-oral route and can cause acute hepatitis in humans. Since HEV was identified as a zoonotic pathogen, different species of HEV strains have been globally identified from various hosts, leading to an expanding range of hosts. The HEV genome consists of a 5' noncoding region, three open reading frames (ORFs), and a 3' noncoding region.

Major 5'-terminally deleted (5'TD) RNA forms of group-B coxsackievirus (CVB-5'TD) has been associated with myocarditis in both mice and humans. Although it is known that interferon-β (IFN-β) signaling is critical for an efficient innate immune response against CVB-induced myocarditis, the link between CVB-5'TD RNA forms and type I IFN signaling in cardiomyocytes remains to be explored. In a mouse model of CVB3/28-induced myocarditis, major early-emerging forms of CVB-5'TD RNA have been characterized as replicative viral populations that impair IFN-β production in the heart.

Tacaribe virus (TCRV) is the prototype of New World mammarenaviruses, a group that includes several members that cause hemorrhagic fevers in humans. The TCRV genome comprises two RNA segments, named S (small) and L (large). Both genomic segments contain noncoding regions (NCRs) at their 5' and 3' ends.

Mengovirus is an oncolytic picornavirus whose broad host range allows for testing in immunocompetent cancer models. Two pathogenicity-ablating approaches, polycytidine (polyC) tract truncation and microRNA (miRNA) targets insertion, eliminated the risk of encephalomyocarditis. To investigate whether a polyC truncated, miRNA-detargeted oncolytic Mengovirus might be boosted, we partially or fully rebuilt the polyC tract into the 5' noncoding region (NCR) of polyC-deleted (MC) oncolytic constructs (NC) carrying miRNA target (miRT) insertions to eliminate cardiac/muscular (miR-133b and miR-208a) and neuronal (miR-124) tropisms.
