An unprecedented application of aryliodine (III) diacetates as substrates in Pd-Ag catalyzed arylation of alkenes is described. The mechanistic studies revealed that the binary Pd-Ag catalysis leads to the decomposition of aryliodine (III) diacetates to oxygen and aryl iodides followed by arylation of alkenes forming Heck-type products. Under optimized conditions both electron-rich and electron-deficient alkenes undergo arylation in high yields. Advantageously, the reaction proceeds smoothly in water as a solvent and neither organic ligands nor inert atmosphere are required.

NADH Analogues Enable Metal- and Light-Free Decarboxylative Functionalization.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California, 91225, United States.

Here we report a metal- and light-free decarboxylative functionalization approach enabled by reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) analogues. The efficient and operationally simple approach, conducted in 5 minutes from in situ preparation of aryliodine (III) dicarboxylates under open-air and ambient conditions, enables diverse bond formation and exhibits a broad substrate scope of over 70 examples. Late-stage functionalization of drug molecules and natural products further demonstrates the synthetic utility of this method.

On the Selectivity in the Synthesis of 3-Fluoropiperidines Using BF-Activated Hypervalent Iodine Reagents.

Fluorinated piperidines find wide applications, most notably in the development of novel therapies and agrochemicals. Cyclization of alkenyl -tosylamides promoted by BF-activated aryliodine(III) carboxylates is an attractive strategy to construct 3-fluoropiperidines, but it suffers from selectivity issues arising from competitive oxoaminations and the inability to easily modulate the reactions diastereoselectivity. Herein, we report an itemized optimization of the reaction conditions carried out on both cyclic and acyclic substrates and outline the origins of substrate- and reagent-based stereo-, regio-, and chemoselectivity.

The carbon-nitrogen bond is one of the most prevalent chemical bonds in natural and artificial molecules, as many naturally existing organic molecules, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials contain at least one nitrogen atom. Radical decarboxylative carbon-nitrogen bond formation from readily available carboxylic acids and their derivatives has emerged as an attractive and valuable tool in modern synthetic chemistry. The promising achievements in this research topic have been demonstrated via utilizing this strategy in the synthesis of complex natural products.

Alkyliodines in High Oxidation State: Enhanced Synthetic Possibilities and Accelerated Catalyst Turn-Over.

In contrast to aryliodine(III) compounds, which have matured into a particularly attractive class of oxidants in modern synthesis, the synthetic potential of related alkyliodine(III) derivatives has remained widely underestimated. This is surprising since several unique synthetic possibilities arise directly from the low stability of their central carbon-iodine bond. In this respect, these high-oxidation-state iodine compounds resemble environmentally benign variants of the prominent metal counterparts such as those derived from palladium, nickel and copper.

A Practical Aryliodine(I/III) Catalysis for the Vicinal Diamination of Styrenes.

ChemSusChem

July 2019

Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology, Av. Països Catalans 16, 43007, Tarragona, Spain.

2,6-Disubstituted iodoarenes bearing amide-functionalized side arms are reported as new structures in redox-active iodine(I/III) catalysis. In combination with bis-sulfonimides as nitrogen sources and 3-chloroperbenzoic acid (mCPBA) as benign terminal oxidant they catalyze the vicinal diamination of styrenes. The obtained reactivity and selectivity outperform other iodoarene catalyst candidates.
