Total mercury (Hg) was determined in muscle tissue of 20 Guiana dolphins stranded along the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, with a mean of 1.07 μg/g wet weight. Mercury concentrations were positively related to body length, possibly related to the capacity of the dolphins to bioaccumulate this element throughout life. The Hg concentrations were not significantly different between males and females, although females (1.08 μg/g) showed slightly higher levels than males (1.04 μg/g). Concentrations were low when compared to results of studies carried out with small cetaceans in the Northern Hemisphere, and with previous studies in the Southeastern Brazil.

In general, mercury (Hg) undergoes biomagnification in aquatic systems. The absence of Hg biomagnification in a certain aquatic environment constitutes an exceptional finding and this seems to be the case for Sepetiba Bay, in Rio de Janeiro state (RJ), Brazil. There are three distinct ecological populations of Guiana dolphins in the Sepetiba Bay (SB)-Ilha Grande Bay (IGB) Complex, inhabiting: (1) the inner part of SB; (2) SB entrance; and (3) IGB.

Response of Guiana dolphins to the construction of a bridge in Ilhéus, Northeastern Brazil.

PLoS One

November 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz, Campus Soane Nazaré de Andrade, Rodovia Jorge Amado, Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil.

This study aimed to investigate whether the use of space and movements of Guiana dolphins were altered during the construction of a cable-stayed bridge at the mouth of the Cachoeira River estuary in Ilhéus, Brazil. We described and compared the visitation rate, use of space, and movements of the Guiana dolphins across two periods: before the construction began (2015-2016) and during the construction of the bridge (2017-2020). A theodolite and a total station were used to observe and record the trajectories of the dolphins.

Polyomaviruses (PyVs) are small double-stranded DNA viruses able to infect species across all vertebrate taxa. In cetaceans, PyVs have been reported only in short-beaked common dolphin (), common bottlenose dolphin () and killer whale (). Herein, we surveyed PyV in 119 cetaceans (29 mysticetes and 90 odontocetes) stranded along the Brazilian coast, from 2002 to 2022, comprising 18 species.

Stitcher: A Surface Reconstruction Tool for Highly Gyrified Brains.

Neuroinformatics

October 2024

Laboratório de Biologia Teórica e Matemática Experimental (MetaBIO), Instituto de Física, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 21941-909, Brazil.

Brain reconstruction, specially of the cerebral cortex, is a challenging task and even more so when it comes to highly gyrified brained animals. Here, we present Stitcher, a novel tool capable of generating such surfaces utilizing MRI data and manual segmentation. Stitcher makes a triangulation between consecutive brain slice segmentations by recursively adding edges that minimize the total length and simultaneously avoid self-intersection.

Assessment of Body Condition in a Threatened Dolphin Population in an Anthropized Area in Southeastern Brazil.

Animals (Basel)

June 2024

Laboratory of Marine Ecology and Conservation (ECoMAR), Department of Ecology, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro 21941-902, Brazil.

Sepetiba Bay, located in southwestern Rio de Janeiro state, in southeastern Brazil, is a region of extreme anthropogenic impact, and is home to a large population of Guiana dolphins, which face increasing and cumulative pressures on their physical health. Cetacean body condition provides a useful indicator for the evaluation of the conservation status of marine mammals. Given this, the present study quantified the proportion of dolphins with different body condition scores and assessed temporal variation in these scores between 2017 and 2022 through the analysis of photographic records.
