For direct and efficient ethanol production from cellulosic materials, we screened optimal cellulases from symbiotic protists of termites through heterologous expression with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. 11 cellulases, belonging to glycoside hydrolase families 5, 7, and 45 endoglucanases (EGs), were confirmed to produce with S. cerevisiae for the first time. A recombinant yeast expressing SM2042B24 EG I was more efficient at degrading carboxylmethyl cellulose than was Trichoderma reesei EG I, a major EG with high cellulolytic activity.

Fungal lignocellulolytic enzymes: an in silico and full factorial design approach.

World J Microbiol Biotechnol

Graduate Program in Bioscience Technologies, Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná, Toledo, Paraná, Brazil.

Efficient degradation of lignocellulosic biomass is key for the production of value-added products, contributing to sustainable and renewable solutions. This study employs a two-step approach to evaluate lignocellulolytic enzymes of Ceratocystis paradoxa, Colletotrichum falcatum, and Sporisorium scitamineum. First, an in silico genomic analysis was conducted to predict the potential enzyme groups produced by these fungi.

This research investigates potential mechanisms of novel magnetic field (MF) treatments in inhibiting cell-wall-degrading enzymes, aiming to reduce weight loss and preserve the post-harvest quality of tomatoes ( L.) as a climacteric fruit. The optimization of the processing parameters, including MF intensity (1, 2, 3 mT), frequency (0, 50, 100 Hz), and duration (10, 20, 30 min), was accomplished by applying an orthogonal array design.

Background: This research aimed to investigate differences in rumen fermentation characteristics between Karakul sheep and Hu sheep reared under identical conditions. The test subjects included newborn Hu and Karakul sheep, which were monitored across three stages: stage I (Weaning period: 15 ~ 30 days), stage II (Supplementary feeding period: 31 ~ 90 days), and stage III (Complete feeding period: 91 ~ 150 days). During the supplementary feeding period, cottonseed hulls were the main roughage source.

Fermentation of ginseng extract is limited by the low concentration of compound K (CK), a bioactive ginsenoside. In this study, a novel approach combining fermentation with cellulase conversion was used to enhance CK production from high concentrations of American ginseng extract (AGE). The reaction conditions, including the feeding rate and concentrations of carbon source, enzyme type, AGE and enzyme concentrations, temperature, pH, and timing of enzyme addition, were optimized.

Advances in fungal sugar transporters: unlocking the potential of second-generation bioethanol production.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry and Immunology, Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, SP, 14049-900, Brazil.

Second-generation (2G) bioethanol production, derived from lignocellulosic biomass, has emerged as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels by addressing growing energy demands and environmental concerns. Fungal sugar transporters (STs) play a critical role in this process, enabling the uptake of monosaccharides such as glucose and xylose, which are released during the enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass. This mini-review explores recent advances in the structural and functional characterization of STs in filamentous fungi and yeasts, highlighting their roles in processes such as cellulase induction, carbon catabolite repression, and sugar signaling pathways.
