Near-IR oxazine dyes are reported that contain sulfonate esters which are rapidly cleaved by esterase activity to unmask highly polar anionic sulfonates. Strategies for the synthesis of these dyes included the development of milder dye condensation conditions with improved functional compatibility and the use of an alkyl halide that allows for the introduction of esterase-labile sulfonates without the need for sulfonation of the target molecule.

High-sensitivity and repeatable detection of hydrophobic molecules through the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique is a tough challenge because of their weak adsorption and non-uniform distribution on SERS substrates. In this research, we present a simple self-assembly protocol for monolayer SERS mediated by 6-deoxy-6-thio-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-SH). This protocol allows for the rapid assembly of a compact silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) monolayer at the oil/water interface within 40 s, while entrapping analyte molecules within hotspots.

The worldwide spread of antibiotic resistance is considered to be one of the major health threats to society. While developing new antibiotics is crucial, there is also a strong need for next-generation analytical methods for studying the physiological state of live bacteria in heterogeneous populations and their response to environmental stress. The spontaneous adsorption of proteins onto nanoparticles, known as the protein corona, provides a unique perspective for designing protein-sensing biosensors. This study proposes a tailored protein corona method mediated by Tween-20 and develops a reverse-capture approach for protein quantification assays. The protein-coated microplate captures titanium dioxide nanosheets (TiO-NS) in a phosphate buffer containing Tween-20 and generates fluorescence signals via the photocatalytic reduction of resazurin to resorufin, thereby indicating the amount of protein.

The physicochemical properties of aerosols, including hygroscopicity, phase state, pH, and viscosity, influence important processes ranging from virus transmission and pulmonary drug delivery to atmospheric light scattering and chemical reactivity. Despite their importance, measurements of these key properties in aerosols remain experimentally challenging due to small particle sizes and low mass densities in air. Fluorescence probe spectroscopy is one of the only analytical techniques that is capable of experimentally determining these properties in situ in a nondestructive and minimally perturbative manner.

Red-emitting oxazine fluorophores are shown to bind to cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) with high affinity. Their fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime are thereby enhanced owing to shielding of the dyes from water. Using CB[7] as an imaging additive leads to a larger number of photons detected per molecule in super-resolution experiments with the dye ATTO655.
