Background: Though automated identification and sensitivity testing has established itself as a standard in many high throughput clinical microbiology laboratories, misidentification by the automated systems can also happen.

Case Report: Here we present a case of sepsis, caused by a commensal inactive Escherichia coli, which had been repeatedly misidentified as Shigella sonnei by VITEK 2 compact.

Conclusions: The laboratory worker should always be aware of possible misidentification and limitations of automated systems.

Introduction: It is well established that () is a common skin commensal microorganism that has been linked to acne. In acne flare-ups, can be found in abundant levels within the inflammatory lesions (called comedones) associated with the skin disease. Recently, it was reported that 3D reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) treated with viable cultures of can elicit β-defensin antimicrobial peptide responses in the skin and can weaken the skin barrier of the RHE after three days of exposure to .

Synthesis of β-lactam-zidovudine pronucleosides as potential selective narrow-spectrum antibacterial agents.

Institut des Biomolécules Max Mousseron, Univ Montpellier, CNRS, ENSCM, Montpellier, France.

Since the discovery of penicillin, the forerunner of the most widely used class of antibiotics ( β-lactams), natural compounds and their derivatives represented a major source of antibacterial therapeutic products whose availability enabled modern medical practices (invasive surgery, organ transplant, .). However, the relentless emergence of resistant bacteria is challenging the long-term efficacy of antibiotics, also decreasing their economic attractiveness for big pharma, leading to a significant decay in antibacterial development in the 21 century and an increased use of last-resort drugs such as carbapenems or colistin.

Unlabelled: , a common commensal bacterium, is a leading cause of nosocomial catheter-associated bloodstream infections. sequence type 2 (ST2) is specifically recognized globally for causing invasive disease. In this study, we identified a novel putative integrated conjugative element, pICE-Sepi-ST2, unique to the genomes of ST2.

Establishment of root nodule symbiosis is initiated by the perception of bacterial Nod factor ligands by the plant LysM receptor kinases NFR1 and NFR5. Receptor signaling initiating the symbiotic pathway depends on the kinase activity of NFR1, while the signaling mechanism of the catalytically inactive NFR5 pseudokinase is unknown. Here, we present the crystal structure of the signaling-competent NFR5 intracellular domain, comprising the juxtamembrane region and pseudokinase domain.

acts both as a colonizing commensal bacterium and invasive pathogen. Nasal colonization is associated with an increased risk of infection caused by the identical strain. In patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), the degree of colonization is associated with the severity of the disease.
