Timing of neuroprognostication in the ICU.

Curr Opin Crit Care

January 2025

Department of Critical Care Medicine.

Purpose Of Review: Neuroprognostication after acute brain injury (ABI) is complex. In this review, we examine the threats to accurate neuroprognostication, discuss strategies to mitigate the self-fulfilling prophecy, and how to approach the indeterminate prognosis.

Recent Findings: The goal of neuroprognostication is to provide a timely and accurate prediction of a patient's neurologic outcome so treatment can proceed in accordance with a patient's values and preferences.

The increasing prevalence of kidney failure highlights the crucial need for effective patient-physician communication to improve health-related quality of life and ensure adherence to treatment plans. This narrative review evaluates communication practices in the context of advanced kidney disease, focusing on the frameworks of shared decision-making, advanced care planning, and communication skills training among nephrologists. The findings highlight the significant gaps in patient-physician communication, particularly in the domains of advanced care planning, shared decision-making, and dialysis withdrawal.

Barriers to transition to resource-oriented sanitation in rural Ethiopia.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2025

Department of Environmental Health Sciences and Technology, Institute of Health, Jimma University, Jimma, Ethiopia.

Recycling excreta resources through resource-oriented toilet systems (ROTS) holds transformative potential, yet adoption remains limited, especially where benefits could be high. This study aims to understand constraints hindering the adoption of ROTS in one such area in Ethiopia. Based on a survey among 476 households comprising 2393 individuals, we examine the plans to use ROTS and willingness to pay for ROTS and apply structural equation modelling to analyze the drivers of these two outcomes while comparing the explanative power of the extended technology acceptance model, extended theory of planned behaviour, and their combined model.

Japan's conditional/time-limited early approval program, initiated in 2014, aimed to advance regenerative medicine by expediting market access. However, the withdrawal of autologous skeletal myoblast sheets (Heartsheet) due to ineffectiveness raises concerns about the balance between rapid approval and scientific integrity. While the program seeks to boost innovation, it risks endorsing costly, unclear treatments under national health care.

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is characterized by a lower overpotential compared to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during electrolysis, which facilitates the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode. Charge distribution, which can be modulated by the introduction of a heterostructure, plays a key role in enhancing the adsorption and cleavage of chemical groups within urea molecules. Herein, a facile all-room temperature synthesis of functional heterojunction NiCoS/CoMoS grown on carbon cloth (CC) is presented, and the as-prepared electrode served as a catalyst for simultaneous hydrogen evolution and urea oxidation reaction.
