It has long been known that thiol-terminated molecules self-assemble as commensurate monolayers on Au(111) surfaces. By spreading floating octadecanethiol monolayers on aqueous solutions of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) and using x rays to reduce the gold ions as well as to probe the structure, we have observed the nucleation of (111)-oriented Au nanoparticles at thiol surfaces. This process may be similar to the formation of biogenic gold by bacteria. The thiol monolayer acts as a "soft template," changing its structure as Au crystals form so that there is a sqrt[3]×sqrt[3] commensurate relationship.

We report the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in -dodecane using a poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) precursor at 90 °C. This formulation is an example of polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), which leads to the formation of a colloidal dispersion of spherical PLMA-PHEMA nanoparticles at 10-20% w/w solids. PISA syntheses involving polar monomers in non-polar media have been previously reported but this particular system offers some unexpected and interesting challenges in terms of both synthesis and characterization.

Immunogenic cell death (ICD) has recently emerged as a promising strategy in reinforcing anti-PD-L1 blockade immunotherapy of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib (PAL), as a clinical star medicine targeting the cell cycle machinery, is an ideal candidate for fabricating a highly efficient ICD inducer for TNBC chemoimmunotherapy. However, the frequently observed chemoresistance and clinical adverse effects, as well as significant antagonistic effects when co-administered with certain chemotherapeutics, have seriously restricted the efficiency of PAL and the feasibility of combination strategies.

This study investigates the effects of homopolymer additives and kinetic traps on the self-assembly of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactide) (PEG-PLA) block copolymer (BCP) nanostructures in aqueous environments. By using non-adsorbing PEG homopolymers to kinetically trap PEG-PLA nanostructures, we demonstrate that varying the concentration and molecular weight of the added PEG induces a reversible micelle-to-vesicle transition. This transition is primarily driven by changes in the molecular geometry of the PEG-PLA BCPs due to excluded volume screening effects.

Covalent organic nanotubes offer enhanced stability, robustness, and functionality, compared to their noncovalent counterparts. This study explores constructing polydiacetylene (PDA) nanotubes using a two-step process: self-assembly via noncovalent interactions followed by UV-induced polymerization of a diacetylene template. A promising building block consisting of a hydrogen-bonding headgroup, barbituric acid, linked to a linear diacetylene chain was prepared.

Despite significant advances in diverse cancer treatment methods, chemotherapy remains the primary approach, and the development of chemoresistance is still a persistent problem during treatment. Here, we developed a derivative of the natural product mangiferin as a carrier for delivering chemotherapeutic drug, aiming to overcome drug resistance through a distinctive four-pronged strategy, including modulation of inflammatory tumor microenvironment (TME), induction of ferroptosis, deep tumor penetration, and the combinatory anticancer effects. After clarifying the promotion effects of the cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in chemoresistance, and leveraging our previous elucidation of the anti-inflammatory and ferroptosis-inducing ability of mangiferin, we synthesized mangiferin amphiphile (MMF) and developed a self-assembled carrier-free nanomedicine, named MP, through the self-assembly of MMF and the representative chemotherapeutic drug paclitaxel (PTX).
