Intrinsic reading motivation of Chinese preschoolers and its relationships with home literacy.

The relationship between intrinsic motivation and home literacy of preschoolers was explored. One hundred and seventy-seven preschool children (3.8 to 6.6 years old) in Mainland China and one of the parents who primarily took care of each child participated in the study. Six indicators were considered as a measure of home literacy. Results showed that after controlling for parents' education level and children's age, three home literacy indicators-parental model of reading behaviour, number of books, and years of character teaching-could explain children's intrinsic reading motivation. Contrary to previous Western studies, Chinese children's freedom of book choice was not related to their intrinsic reading motivation. Results are discussed in the context of culture differences.

Although nanozyme has shown great potential in designing fluorescent assays for pesticide residue, most of them are based on single emission, thus affecting the detection accuracy. Herein, a copper-based fluorescent nanozyme (Cu-BH) synthesized with dual-ligand, integrating fluorescence and oxidase-mimic into one spherical nanomaterial, was used firstly to establish a ratiometric approach for visual detection of thiophanate methyl (TM). Cu-BH possesses excellent oxidase-like activities, triggering the oxidation of colorless o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into yellow luminescent products (oxOPD, λem = 564 nm).

Proteins that emerge de novo from noncoding DNA could negatively or positively influence cellular physiology in the sense of providing a possible adaptive advantage. Here, we employ two approaches to study such effects in a human cell line by expressing random sequences and mouse de novo genes that lack homologs in the human genome. We show that both approaches lead to differential growth effects of the cell clones dependent on the sequences they express.

N6-methyladenosine (mA) exerts many of its regulatory effects on eukaryotic mRNAs by recruiting cytoplasmic YT521-B homology-domain family (YTHDF) proteins. Here, we show that in Arabidopsis thaliana, the interaction between mA and the major YTHDF protein ECT2 also involves the mRNA-binding ALBA protein family. ALBA and YTHDF proteins physically associate via a deeply conserved short linear motif in the intrinsically disordered region of YTHDF proteins and their mRNA target sets overlap, with ALBA4 binding sites being juxtaposed to mA sites.
