Objectives: Qian-Yu (QY), a Chinese medicine formula, has anti-inflammatory and broad spectrum anti-bacterial activity. This study is undertaken to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of Qian-Yu (QY) in chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP).

Materials And Methods: The potential of QY in the treatment of CBP was evaluated using a CBP animal model by examining the anti-inflammatory activity. Its consequences were analyzed by immunological and histopathological methods. Experimental chronic bacterial prostatitis was induced by instillation of bacterial suspension of Escherichia coli 7.5 × 10(5) CFU/ml into the prostatic urethra. Animals were followed up for four weeks and then treated with either 7 mg/kg QY or 7 mg/kg positive control agent-Qianlietai (QLT) or 1 ml of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for the controls. Ten rats in each group were sacrificed at the end of four weeks. The inhibition of inflammation and its consequences were analyzed histologically. Prostatic IL-8, SIgA and zinc concentrations were measured by ELISA, RIA and ICP-AES, respectively. The data was expressed as mean ± S.D. Least-significant difference (LSD) of one-way ANOVA (SPSS 12.0) was used to determine the differences of scores.

Results: The histopathology showed resolving prostatitis in QY-and QLT-treated groups and the immunology showed reduction of IL-8 and increment of SIgA contents in prostatic tissues as compared to the control groups. The prostatic zinc levels were higher in the QY-and QLT-treated groups than those in the controls. These results suggested that QY is effective in CBP treatment.

Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) carries a high economic cost and clinical morbidity in the United States. Beyond prolonged admissions and poor post-injury functional status, there is an additional cost of chronic shunt-dependent hydrocephalus for many aSAH patients. Adjuvant lumbar drain (LD) placement has been hypothesized to promote clearance of subarachnoid blood from the cisternal space, with an ultimate effect of decreasing shunt placement rates.

Often ill people are, first of all, patients with recurrent infectious and inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract (URT). They put a significant financial burden on the healthcare system. The leading etiological factors of recurrent inflammatory diseases of URT, in addition to pathogenic bacterial microflora, are viral agents (viruses of the viral respiratory infections group, herpes viruses).

Iron and heme are essential nutrients for all branches of life. Pathogenic members of the Bacteroidota phylum, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, do not synthesize heme and rely on host hemoproteins for heme as a source of iron and protoporphyrin IX. P.

Plasmid hybrids as vectors for antibiotic resistance in environmental Escherichia coli.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

CSIRO Environment, Ecosciences Precinct, 41 Boggo Road, Dutton Park, QLD 4102, Australia.

This study investigated the potential role of phages in the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factor genes (VFGs) in Escherichia coli (E. coli). A comprehensive in silico analysis of 18,410 phage sequences retrieved from the National Center for Biotechnology Information database (NCBI) revealed distinct carriage patterns for ARGs and VFGs between lytic, temperate, and chronic phage types.

Introduction: Environmental changes and modifications in leisure habits have facilitated the emergence of new bacteria responsible for causing ear infections with different presentations. In this context, Turicella otitidis is a pathogen for which isolated cases of external and middle ear infections have been reported. However, our experience indicates a resurgence in its occurrence in recent years.
