Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models are being deployed in many domains of society and have recently reached the field of drug discovery. Given the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance, as well as the challenges intrinsic to antibiotic development, there is an urgent need to accelerate the design of new antimicrobial therapies. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are therapeutic agents for treating bacterial infections, but their translation into the clinic has been slow owing to toxicity, poor stability, limited cellular penetration and high cost, among other issues.

There is growing interest in developing protein-rich foods for the elderly using plant proteins. The application of soy protein isolate (SPI) as a model protein to create protein-rich, custard-like soft foods presents a unique opportunity for innovative formulations tailored to those within the aging population suffering from swallowing difficulties. This study investigated the physicochemical and textural properties of custard-type soft food formulations developed using SPI for dysphagic elderly individuals, with the goal of achieving characteristics similar to those of optimal milk protein-based counterparts.

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Plant Diversity and Specialty Crops, Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, 430074, Hubei, China.

Kiwifruit is an economically and nutritionally important horticultural fruit crop worldwide. The genomic data of several kiwifruit species have been released, providing an unprecedented opportunity for pan-genome analysis to comprehensively investigate the inter- and intra-species genetic diversity and facilitate utilization for kiwifruit breeding. Here, we generated a kiwifruit super pan-genome using 15 high-quality assemblies of eight Actinidia species.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death (PCD) associated with lipid membrane peroxidation. It has gained attention in cancer research because some tumor cells that are resistant to other forms of PCD are sensitive to ferroptosis. Despite the significant amount of research on ferroptosis, the list of known inducers remains limited, creating opportunities to discover new compounds with clinical potential.

Rebound bone loss following denosumab discontinuation is an important barrier in the effective long-term treatment of skeletal disorders. This is driven by increased osteoclastic bone resorption following the offset of RANKL inhibition, and sequential osteoclast-directed therapy has been utilised to mitigate this. However, current sequential treatment strategies intervene following the offset of RANKL inhibition and this approach fails to consistently prevent bone loss.
