Objective: To study the effects and mechanisms of Huanglian Jiedu Decoction (HJD) and its disassembled recipes containing serums on the proliferation and differentiation of preadipocytes.

Methods: HJD and its disassembled recipes containing serums were prepared. The 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were cultured. The proliferation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes was detected by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) method. The accumulation of lipid droplets in the cytoplasm of differentiated preadipocytes was observed by oil red O staining and quantitatively analyzed by colorimetry. The mRNA expressions of peroxisome proliferation activated receptor y (PPAR gamma) and CAAT/enhancer binding protein (C/EBP alpha) were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Results: Intervention with serum containing HJD, Phellodendron amurense Rupr plus Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, or Gardenia jasminoides Ellis showed significantly stimulative effects on the proliferation of preadipocytes, as compared with that in the blank control group (P<0.05, P<0.01). The preadipocytes treated with serum containing HJD, Phellodendron amurense Rupr plus Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, Coptis chinensis Franch or Gardenia jasminoides Ellis showed that the lipid droplets in the cytoplasm were significantly lessened, so did the mRNA expressions of PPAR gamma and C/EBP alpha when compared with the blank control group (P<0.05, P<0.01).

Conclusions: HJD promoted the proliferation of preadipocytes, decreased the accumulation of lipid droplets during the differentiation of adipocytes, and inhibited the differentiation of adipocytes, which might be associated with its effects on decreasing the mRNA expressions of PPAR gamma and C/EBP alpha. Phellodendron amurense Rupr and Gardenia jasminoides Ellis were the main components of HJD playing these roles.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoction is a complex polydispersed phase system containing colloid solution, emulsion and suspension, which maybe induced by the supramolecular phenomenon in decoction. However, until now there is no systematic analysis of composition and formation mechanism of supramolecules in TCM decoction contained mineral drug and herb medicines. Maxing Shigan Decoction (MXSGT), one of the classic TCM recipes, has been widely used in the treatment of fever in clinic.

The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of Bushen recipe and its disassembled prescriptions on liver injury and chronic hepatitis B. Liver injury was induced in normal and hepatitis B virus (HBV)‑transgenic mice through injection of Concanavalin A, followed by treatment with Bushen recipe and its disassembled prescriptions including the Bushen‑yang, the Bushen‑yin and the QingHua groups as well as the GanYanLing group (positive control). Subsequently, their liver function indexes were investigated by a microplate method and liver sections were blindly evaluated using an optical microscope by a pathologist.

Objective: To explore the effect of Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD) and its disassembled recipes on rats' neurogenesis after focal cerebral ischemia and to investigate its underlying molecular mechanisms.

Methods: Focal cerebral ischemia model was induced by occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery for 90 min using the intraluminal filament model. Rats were divided into the sham-operation group, the model group, the BYHWD group, the qi supplementing group, and the blood activating group.

Objective: To study the action mechanism of Qinggan Huoxue Recipe (QGHXR) and its disassembled recipes for treatment of alcoholic liver fibrosis (ALF) by observing their regulation on the expressions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and type 1 tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP-1).

Methods: 130 male SD rats were randomly divided into the blank control group (n=10), the CCI4 group (n=10), and the modeling group (n=110). Rats in the modeling group were intervened by complex factors dominated as alcohol.
