Arrhythmia is a common and serious global health problem, contributing to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The cardiac muscle is susceptible to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, which can lead to fatal arrhythmias during open-heart surgery. We investigated the potential prophylactic effect of angiotensin 1-7 (Ang 1-7) using an in vivo rat model of I/R injury and examined the underlying mechanisms.

Impact of COVID-19 infection on cyclooxygenase-2 gene expression and mast cell count in testicular tissue of azoospermic men.

Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand)

December 2024

Epidemiology, Liver and Digestive Research Center, Research Institute for Health Development, Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences, Sanandaj, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • * This research focused on 41 men undergoing testicular sperm extraction, comparing those infected with COVID-19 to non-infected individuals, specifically examining inflammatory proteins like mast cells and COX-2 in testicular tissue.
  • * Results revealed that COVID-19-infected men had higher levels of COX-2 expression and more mast cells, indicating heightened inflammation in their testicular tissue, which may negatively affect male fertility.

Management of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is determined by patient age, risk of rupture, and comorbid conditions. While endovascular and microsurgical interventions offer solutions to mitigate the risk of rupture, pharmacological management strategies may complement these approaches or serve as alternatives in appropriate cases. The pathophysiology of IAs allows for the targeting of inflammation to prevent the development and rupture of IAs.

As a hybrid weapon, two novel series of pyrazoles, 16a-f and 17a-f, targeting both COX-2 and ACE-1-N-domain, were created and their anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, and anti-fibrotic properties were evaluated. In vitro, 17b and 17f showed COX-2 selectivity (SI = 534.22 and 491.

Background: Aging-related physiological changes, such as decline in renal function, not only exacerbates pre-existing comorbidities but also escalate the susceptibility to adverse events. Previous studies have shown that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are associated with an increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI), and the concomitant use of renin-angiotensin system blockade or diuretics may further potentiate the risk. However, studies evaluating the risk of AKI associated with NSAIDs (including routes, concomitant use of different NSAIDs, categories (traditional NSAIDs or COX-2 inhibitors), and cumulative doses of NSAIDs) are limited, particularly the risk of AKI associated with the dual or triple combination of NSAIDs with renin-angiotensin system blockade (RAS blockades) and/or diuretics.
